I just don't like forced moral lessons and a lot of critics, Fox Searchlight have used the idea of the importance of the movie because of the subject matter of the movie.

Also, I find it too easy to judge the past with the morals and values of today. If you were born in 1744,maybe we(you) would have thought slavery was a normal thing, that s just how things evolved in those times, and children were raised to think that way. But in 2013,telling me Slavery is bad ? No shit ! It would be way more ballsy to adress racial issues in America in 2013 where most people in prison in America are black and hispanic. Just look at unemployment rates in black neighborhoods in the big cities of America.

I have nothing against 12YAS as a movie. I am just fed up with the moral lessons of people who talk about it and promote it : " Go see it or be an insensitive human being !"

Oh and human misery giving hard-ons to Steve McQueen is a factor too.

I really wonder what his fourth film will be about : genocide, torture, incest : take your pick from Mr King of Pain.

It's a movie about a slave and slavery. The whole 'slavery is bad' thing is pretty damn hard to avoid when making a movie like that.

Funnily enough Happy (the DM2 song) has all of a sudden turned into a massive hit. It barely missed out at #1 on the Hot 100 this week, and it's sitting pretty atop the iTunes chart. If the Oscars wanted to go with the biggest hit, they would actually give it to that.

Jlaw won last year, AH may come home empty handed, I could care less.

If anything, a Gravity sweep would be cool.

You summed up perfectly why 12YAS should not win. Like I've said before, any decent human being in this day and age is going to recognize how evil slavery was. It's ridiculous to say that 12YAS is an incredible film because it "exposes" slavery's horrors. Um, that was exposed decades ago. As you mentioned, it would be far more relevant to expose the horrors of minority treatment in the US today. Breaking down 12YAS as a film, some of the screenplay and Fassbender and Nyongo's performances are the only things exceptional about it. The directing, cinematography, score, editing, and some of the characters/performances (including the protagonist) are all merely decent at best. And yeah, McQueen is the black Mel Gibson as far as I'm concerned. He totally gets off to torture porn.

You know, after having to debate (about 3) hicks today about the confederate flag over the course of an hour, 12 Years a Slave might be an important film that all Americans should see after all.

I used to think no person in their right mind wouldn't know that chattel slavery was one of the greatest crimes committed by humanity, but those people sure didn't know.

Full list of presenters is announced. Gotta say, Bill Murray is a bit of a surprise.

I'm thoroughly against race baiting or any sort of Oscar baiting - just give me a great story that doesn't beat me over the head with a "message"It is ridiculous to insinuate that the way minorities are treated today are "horrific". Obama just passed a law saying schools can't get black and Hispanic students in trouble unless an equal amount of whites and Asians get in trouble. Affirmative Action makes sure every company has a "rainbow" of diversity.A real exposé on the Knockout Game (one that realistically portrays the kids for what they are) would be more edgy and groundbreaking in this PC era of ours

Source?

You mean that same 'Knockout Game' that most sensible news outlets have labelled a 'fake trend' and highly sensationalised at best?

Here's the problem with that though. The kind of people that still don't believe slavery was all that bad or try to justify it are ALWAYS going to believe that. If they saw 12YAS they would make excuses and say it was Hollywood dramatizing it. They wouldn't admit to the horrors of it because something in them can't accept that. Those kind of people are too deep in denial.

Pretty much like the people in denial about Climate Change, despite being brutally obvious they choose to ignore it.
