Best movies of 2013 (Results link in first post)

Still shocked at the Captain Phillips snub. Easily the biggest fail of this top 20, IMO.

Captain Phillips barely missed my personal top 20, the highlights of that movie for me were some fantastic performances but the movie as a whole just didn't do it for me.  (I don't even know why exactly, I gave it a 7.5/10 though)

I feel like some sort of idiot for thinking Rush was the best movie of 2013. It had everything for me, great performances, humour, intense action and best of all, very uplifting.

Most people really like Rush. It's pretty high on the IMDB Top 250 right now iirc.

OMG Man of Steel made the top 10! That's fucking hilarious, especially after how proud some people were that it got voted onto the Worst of All Time list.Of course it has no place being anywhere near a Top 10, but still, a punch in the eye of rabid haters.

A boring movie, stupid as fuck (neural bridge to control a robot? wut? lol), with actors who have the charisma of a tree, and some cool CGI battles. TF 1 and 3 are far superior, but get trashed because Bay made them. This was made by del Toro, and it is immediately awesome because of that. So stupid.

Best moment of the movie is "OH big monster Cat 7 or whatevs coming". The monster arrives and gets defeated in 30 seconds.

I wouldn't call it anything special but at least it doesn't shit in your mouth like the Bayformers movies do.

#4: PACIFIC RIM

Guillermo Del Toro was basically given over 150 million dollars to live out every kid’s fantasy i.e. to make a movie about Giant Robots (Jaegers) fighting Giant Monsters (Kaiju), and did he ever do one hell of a job. Pacific Rim delivered everything you would expect from a movie like this. It was a true triumph of visual effects when the Jaegers look like they are actually sharing the screen with the actors and you never question that fact. The Hong Kong fight may have been the best action scene of the year, and the character designs were really inspired. “Cancelling the Apocalypse” became an internet meme, and Mako Mori became an internet sensation but for whatever reason, the movie could not branch out and make a splash beyond the internet – it did well at the box office, just not as well as expectations.

Box office performance aside, this was a really fun time at the movies, and in the end isn’t that why we go watch the movies?

Brilliant Dynamite Neon

I saw it.  WOW!  I have never seen anything like that on the screen before.  I recommend this movie whole-heatedly.  Is it perfect?  No.  Is it, from a story and character perspective, the best film I have seen this summer?  Probably not. Does any of that matter?  NO!

The fact that this thing isn't doing 100 million dollars this weekend is both a mystery to me and a tragic accident to film making as a whole.

Give this thing a sequel, Legendary.  Give it a sequel and then team it up with Godzilla for the third.

Blankments

I had one disappointment with this movie: No day-time battles. That said, HOLY CRAP. The action, as I expected, was phenomenal; I love that I was finally able to see mech vs. monster battles in live-action. The film had a great sense of fun (loved all the comic relief characters, which is rare for me), and it truly transported you to another world. It actually reminded me a lot of Avatar. Serviceable story with an average lead, but it absorbed you into a world that was just astounding. I feel like I should give it higher (and probably will go higher with a rewatch) but I give it an A.

StarSaber

EPIC! I need to go back and view it again minus the 3D because I feel it impeded my opinion a tad. But the fights were great and in many cases intense. I loved the seen with Mako as a child running for the Kaiju, very powerful IMO. The massive scale of the movie (action) is what I keep thinking back on a definitely why I loved it.

I loved Charlie Day and Ron Perlman, good use of comic relief that didn't bog down the movie.

Acting was fine, nothing noteworthy, but I definitely feel it didn't pop out to me as bad.

The characters themselves could have been better, I actually like the 3 main ones but they were too predictable in their actions. It doesn't bother me too much but it seemed significant enough to mention.

The visuals, monster/robot designs, and overall sense of style and cinematography were phenomenal.

The ending scene was too short though, when they pop up out of the water I feel that scene should have been extended or another should have been added.

#3: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

“Catching Fire” was everything a sequel should be – it raised the stakes, it expanded the scope of the world and it fixed the issues in the original. The movie was paced almost perfectly, every single time I felt that a scene was dragging, or that the plot had not advanced, the scene changed or the next plot device came into the picture. For a sequel which was technically rushed out following the departure of the original director and within 18 months of the first movie, this was a remarkable improvement on the first movie.

Good performances, a good storyline and an amazing supporting cast all added up to make this a complete entertaining movie and the #1 movie of 2013 in terms of domestic box office. Can’t wait for Mockingjay part 1.

Here comes a big surprise I loved it. 5/5

Heretic

By far the best blockbuster of the year. Massive step up from THG, which was already a good adaption. This was almost perfect.

One of the best movies I've seen this year and probably the best large scale movie I've seen this year as well.  The first one was really lame imo, this one is everything I HEARD others say about the first.  The games were brutal, violent and completely unpredictable and for the first time in the series, I really felt for Katniss, I felt the danger and even though I know she can't die, I feared for everyone else.  I'm actually kind of happy to be in on the Hunger Game love fest now.  It always seemed like I was a bit of a pariah when it comes to blockbusters.  Not a big fan of Potter, The Dark Knight is hit and miss, same with Marvel and of course I like Twilight while everyone else despises it.  Finally a blockbuster I like just like everyone else. lol.

 9/10

Dragon

I laughed, Cried and Cheered. A+

#2: FROZEN

The movie that made everyone say “Disney is back”. I have to admit, the trailers didn’t make me think Frozen would be any good, in fact the trailers didn’t tell me anything about the movie at all. But the movie itself is good, even though I didn’t enjoy it as much as a lot of posters here, it was still a very good movie. Unlike most Disney movies, I liked that the focus was not so much on the romance as much as it was on the relationship between Elsa and Anna. Josh Gad’s snowman stole the show with his song about summertime. And of course, we also have “Let it go”

All in all, a good movie which may have completed the Disney renaissance.

Really enjoyed it. Great throwback to the Disney golden era but with a modern twist. Some very catchy tunes. Kristen Bell made Anna fun to watch and didn't know she had that voice. Also had more heart then anything Pixars put out since Toy Story 3. Liked it a lot more then Wreck It Ralph, which I thought was going to be a lot better but spiraled downhill once they stayed in that same game with forgettable side characters. But to each his own regarding that one.

This did feel a lot more like the Disney of old right from the opening song. Right up there with Gravity and Catching Fire as one of the better movies I've seen this year. Should be popular all season long and will probably sell a lot of toys too.

Absolutely fantastic. Charming, funny, beautiful animation, and wonderful music. It can stand proudly with the other great Disney films.

An amazing breathtaking Disney film which is their best since The Lion King. The music is stunning [especially Let It Go] and the film looks beautiful. It also differs from the usual fairy-tale movie and all the characters are amazing- especially Elsa

You are joking, right?
