"Ultimately, in the history of the Academy, people may be wondering what all that jazz was about "Chicago" in 2002. Zellweger's whiny pouty-lipped poof faced and spindly attempt at playing an ingenue makes her nomination as best actress even more of a an a" - Michael Szymanski, Zap2it.com

Why Box Office Analysts Think It's Overrated -

"I'll be honest one of the worst films to win Best Picture." - DAR

"Up there with the worst best picture winners of all time." - baumer

Fun Fact - "During the song "Cell Block Tango" Hunyak speaks in Hungarian, but the actress is Russian and her accent makes the speech very difficult to understand even for native speakers of Hungarian."

Maximus is a powerful Roman general, loved by the people and the aging Emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Before his death, the Emperor chooses Maximus to be his heir over his own son, Commodus, and a power struggle leaves Maximus and his family condemned to death. The powerful general is unable to save his family, and his loss of will allows him to get captured and put into the Gladiator games until he dies. The only desire that fuels him now is the chance to rise to the top so that he will be able to look into the eyes of the man who will feel his revenge.

TomatoMeter - 76%

IMDb - 8.5

Metacritic - 64

Box Office - 187m Dom / 457m WW

Why Critics Think It's Overrated -

"Listen to the audience as they leave the theatre. Are they talking about being moved by honor and justice, or going 'wow' at the bloodshed so spectacularly delivered?" - Jeffery Overstreet, Looking Closer

"Time for a little gladiatorial gore with your Milk Duds. Gladiator is here, and it's big, glorious and eminently dumb." - David Germain, Associated Press

Why Box Office Analysts Think It's Overrated -

"I don't like movies with men walking around in their underwear, not my coup of tea. Troy, Kingdom of Heaven, Alexander, etc, etc, = Gay Fest" - Mcclaine

"uh, well...i suppose i'll drop in to say that it was fucking stupid. i'm not entertained by stupid men doing stupid things, especially when that's pretty much the only thing going for it. suppose it looked pretty good though" - lisa

Fun Factbaumer once asked the Panda if he even likes movies, well the Panda is happy to say he does like this one.

An intense portrayal of elite soldiers who have one of the most dangerous jobs in the world: disarming bombs in the heat of combat. When a new sergeant, James, takes over a highly trained bomb disposal team amidst violent conflict, he surprises his two subordinates, Sanborn and Eldridge, by recklessly plunging them into a deadly game of urban combat. James behaves as if he's indifferent to death. As the men struggle to control their wild new leader, the city explodes into chaos, and James' true character reveals itself in a way that will change each man forever.

TomatoMeter - 97%

IMDb - 7.6

Metacritic - 94

Box Office - 17m Dom / 49m WW

Why Critics Think It's Overrated -

"I wasn't exactly blown away by it (no pun intended here at all), but it remains an engaging film. There's certainly a great story to be told in here somewhere, it's just not the great film I've been hearing about." - Jeff Beck, Examiner.com

"Beautifully shot, well acted, and completely unfocused to the point of, well, what was the point? ... don't be fooled." - Kevin A. Ranson, MovieCrypt.com

Why Box Office Analysts Think It's Overrated

"I still think its overrated and I still think Point Break is the best she ever did... But, oh, well... " - pinocchio

"Yes its tense, Yes its well acted, but part of me agrees with Schumacker. It is a very generic war film that plays it by the numbers." - spottswoode

Fun Fact - "Several key American crew members were stopped and questioned and/or had their baggage rummaged through by American airport security prior to going and/or coming back from Jordan. Even one of the producers was held for questioning upon returning to Los Angeles."

Not even top 10?

I am disappoint.

If it makes you feel better it had the same number of points as this next one, it just happened to have one less vote than it so I used that to break the tie.

And so number 11 is a movie I absolutely despise.

300

In the Battle of Thermopylae of 480 BC an alliance of Greek city-states fought the invading Persian army in the mountain pass of Thermopylae. Vastly outnumbered, the Greeks held back the enemy in one of the most famous last stands of history. Persian King Xerxes lead a Army of well over 100,000 (Persian king Xerxes before war has about 170,000 army) men to Greece and was confronted by 300 Spartans, and several hundred Arcadians. Xerxes waited for 10 days for King Leonidas to surrender or withdraw left with no options he moved. The battle lasted for about 3 days and after which all 300 Spartans were killed. The Spartan defeat was not the one expected, as a local shepherd, named Ephialtes, defected to the Persians and informed Xerxes of a separate path through Thermopylae, which the Persians could use to outflank the Greeks.

TomatoMeter - 60%

IMDb - 7.8

Metacritic - 51

Box Office - 210m Dom / 456m WW

Why Critics Think It's Overrated

"Asscrack-ugly" - Fernando F. Croce, CinePassion

"300 has one-dimensional caricatures who talk like professional wrestlers plugging their next feud." - Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

Why Box Office Analysts Think It's Overrated -

"Overrated and terrible. The characters are bland with little development. I could care less for the action in the movie since I did not care for the characters. There was no excitement in the action sequence. The movie also suffers from cheesy dialogue." - Jesus of Suburbia

"I hate everything in this movie with a burning passion.  I hate all of it's cheesy, bland cliche'ness meant to give 12 year olds a patriotic freedom boner from all the blood, gore, and tits; and I hate Snyder for making this piece of shit movie and all his other awful fucking movies." - The Panda

Fun FactKing Leonidas derides the Athenians as "boy-lovers." It was, in fact, the Spartan army that was erroneously thought to encourage homosexual relationships among soldiers due to the fact that a Spartan male would live with his fellow soldiers till about 30 years old.  This means that all the mass gay porno comparisons to this movie are actually accurate, I guess despite being wrong about nearly everything in Greek and Persian society it did get one thing unintentionally correct.

Paranormal Activity

(105 Points, 4 votes)

<ahttp://ia.media-imdb.com/images/M/MV5BMjY1NjcxODQ4MV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMzUxNjM4Mg@@._V1_SX214_.jpg' alt='Posted Image' class='bbc_img' />

After a young, middle class couple moves into a suburban 'starter' tract house, they become increasingly disturbed by a presence that may or may not be somehow demonic but is certainly most active in the middle of the night. Especially when they sleep. Or try to.

TomatoMeter - 83%

IMDb - 6.4

Metacritic - 68

Box Office - 107m DOM / 193m WW

Why Critics Think It's Overrated -

" a fairly satisfying piece of filmmaking and an overhyped piece of cult marketing." - Sean Axmaker, Seanax.com

"Paranormal Activity boasts some scary moments, sure, but the movie cannot live up to its own hype . . ." - James O'ehly, fanastiqueZINE

Why Box Office Analysts Think It's Overrated -

"Highly overrated." - Noctis

"Not a real scary movie, but a fun one, nonetheless. My main attraction to this franchise is just guessing the next way the ghost screws with the couple." - triebfan695

Fun Fact - "The actors weren't given scripts but were given guidelines on how to behave or what to discuss in their scenes."

I'll talk like I'm ijack and discuss Paranormal Activity (I love PA for sure but I understand why some might not)

Speaking like ijack now:

Paranormal Activity has now become a legendary horror film and is spoken about in the same vein as the other greats.  Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Nightmare on Elm Street and The Shining were good films but they are just as notch below what Paranormal Activity brings to the table.  Katie Featherstone has a better performance than Jack Nicholson in The Shining and director Oren Peli really has elevated himself to an iconic director.  Simply put, he will win an oscar one day.  The shot selection in this film is breathtaking.  The scene at the end when Micah gets thrown into the camera, it's on par with shots in The Godfather and Star Wars and other good films, good, but not great like Paranormal Activity is.

Hugo

(105 points, 5 votes)

Posted Image

Hugo is an orphan boy living in the walls of a train station in 1930s Paris. He learned to fix clocks and other gadgets from his father and uncle which he puts to use keeping the train station clocks running. The only thing that he has left that connects him to his dead father is an automaton (mechanical man) that doesn't work without a special key. Hugo needs to find the key to unlock the secret he believes it contains. On his adventures, he meets George Melies, a shopkeeper, who works in the train station, and his adventure-seeking god-daughter. Hugo finds that they have a surprising connection to his father and the automaton, and he discovers it unlocks some memories the old man has buried inside regarding his past.

TomatoMeter - 94%

IMDb - 7.6

Metacritic - 83

Box Office - 73m DOM / 185 WW

Why Critics Think It's Overrated

"On some very basic levels, Hugo just isn't very good." - Tom Clift, Moviedex

"It's possible to see the attraction, but when people break into applause over the credits, some are going to be left cold." - Adam Lee Davies, Little White Lies

Why Box Office Analysts Think It's Overrated

"Ordinary. The film history stuff in it is fascinating, but the rest of the film falls flat. It felt kind of disjointed overall. It's also very orange and blue which I thought everyone hated, and yet it won for Best Cinematography." - lab276

"Overrated. Good visuals, good music, good 3D, good acting, but unfortunately boring story. " - Goffe Rises

Fun FactThe opening track shot of the city ending at the train station was the very first shot designed and it took one year to complete. It required 1000 computers to render each frame required for the shot.

Crash

(116 points, 6 votes)

<ahttp://ia.media-imdb.com/images/M/MV5BOTk1OTA1MjIyNV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwODQxMTkyMQ@@._V1_SY317_CR0,0,214,317_.jpg' alt='Posted Image' class='bbc_img' />

Several stories interweave during two days in Los Angeles involving a collection of inter-related characters, a police detective with a drugged out mother and a thieving younger brother, two car thieves who are constantly theorizing on society and race, the white district attorney and his irritated and pampered wife, a racist white veteran cop (caring for a sick father at home) who disgusts his more idealistic younger partner, a successful Hollywood director and his wife who must deal with the racist cop, a Persian-immigrant father who buys a gun to protect his shop, a Hispanic locksmith and his young daughter who is afraid of bullets, and more.

TomatoMeter - 75%

IMDb - 7.9

Metacritic - 69

Box Office - 54m DOM / 98m WW

Why Critics Think It's Overrated -

"Don't let yourself get carried away by the raves: Crash is solid but no masterpiece." - Rob Gonsalves, eFilmCritic.com

"It's the sort of movie that makes people feel like they've heard an important statement without actually having said anything much." - Luke Y. Thompson, LYTRules

Why Box Office Analysts Think It's Overrated -

"No way should have Crash and Wall-e have won. Brokeback and the Dark Knight should have won instead." - Spongebob Squarepants

"It's a terrible movie that shouldn't have been there in the first place. I hated it when I saw it in theaters the summer before, and to see it win that night was somewhat mind-blowing. I felt Hollywood had been straight-up duped." - RichWS

Fun Fact - "Holds distinction for being the last Best Picture Oscar-winner to be released on VHS in the United States, and the first to be released on Blu-ray."

In the future, Jake, a paraplegic war veteran, is brought to another planet, Pandora, which is inhabited by the Na'vi, a humanoid race with their own language and culture. Those from Earth find themselves at odds with each other and the local culture.

TomatoMeter - 83%

IMDb - 8.0

Metacritic - 83

Box Office - 760m DOM / 2.78b WW

Why Critics Think It's Overrated

"It's good. It should have been better." - Widget Walls, Needcoffee.com

"Avatar is a phenomenon you can't ignore, monumentally imposing and done with extraordinary expertise - but the same could be said of the Dubai skyline, and I'm not sure that represents any future worth investing in." - Jonathan Romney, Independent on Sunday

Why Box Office Analysts Think It's Overrated -

"This hasn't aged that well with me. I hope Avatar 2 isn't entirely reliant on amazing CGI/3D. If that happens, then James Cameron has officially switched from using storytelling to advance technology to the opposite. Still love Stephen Lang's character though." - Ozymandias

"Doesn't hold up well when viewing at home 3D-less. Without the visual perfection seeing it in theaters, it lacks so much and is much too long. The story is weak and the acting isn't anything special (though I did like Worthington)." - ascs1312

Fun FactIt is the highest grossing movie of all time, betcha didn't know that.

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

(132 Points, 4 Votes)

<ahttp://ia.media-imdb.com/images/M/MV5BMjE4MjA1NTAyMV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNzM1NDQyMQ@@._V1_SX214_.jpg' alt='Posted Image' class='bbc_img' />

While Frodo & Sam continue to approach Mount Doom to destroy the One Ring, unaware of the path Gollum is leading them, the former Fellowship aid Rohan & Gondor in a great battle in the Pelennor Fields, Minas Tirith and the Black Gates as Sauron wages his last war against Middle-Earth.

TomatoMeter - 94%

IMDb - 8.9

Metacritic - 94

Box Office - 377m DOM / 1.12b WW

Why Critics Think It's Overrated -

"I'm still not as blissed out by this trilogy as are hardcore fans of the J.R.R. Tolkien novels or filmgoers who revel in endless battle scenes. Still, this end chapter is as visually spectacular -- with its mythological creatures -- as movies get." - Leah Rozen, People Magazine

"It is precisely Jackson's pandering to fans' expectations that repeatedly drags The Return of the King to a halt." - Todd R. Ramlow, Pop Matters

Why Box Office Analysts Think It's Overrated -

"I hate these movies. They are long, boring and stupid, and oh yeah, overrated." - Mcclaine

"Definitely my least favourite of the 3. It works as a final instalment but the endless series of set pieces don't make it as rewarding to rewatch as the previous 2." - Hatebox

Fun Fact - "A normal major motion picture averages about 200 effects shots. This film had 1488."
