Weekend ASM2 thread: 92M

Recommended Posts

Well, yeah.Ok, sure, Avengers raised the bar.But remove that from the equation, were still not impressed. You know what also raised the bar? Spider-man 3 opening to 150m plus.Granted, yes, part of the reason were here today is cause...Spideman. 3 sucked.

kowhite,

Sorry but an opening that represents a new low for your franchise is not great. Especially when you've already scheduled two sequels and announced two spinoffs

Is there a thread for Bad Neighbours? I saw an OW club.

Yeah there's a thread. It's called just "Neighbors" here in the states

Thanks. See, I really didn't know anything. It was good watching a comedy without having already seen the best jokes.

It's not a low.  It actually opened 50% higher than ASM.  Come on Chewy, get with the program.  This is a HUGE bump from the first.

Agreed.  But we all know that the multiplier on this one is going to be at THE ABSOLUTE MAX a 2.5.  But more realistically it'll be about 2.4.  So if it hits 90 mill, the ceiling is 240 mill.  That's less than the last one which means there is no growth.  So jaded?  Sure.  Realistic is more like it though imo.

Oh, I doubt it'll do much more than 240, and it's not a happy result, but it's not a flop, either. I don't think it's due to the quality of the film, necessarily, or even the response to the first, though that is a factor.

Really, at this point, we're entering a point of genre fatigue. Even with Marvel's continued success, there are a ton of superhero films getting released. Last year had four. 2012 had three. 2011 had four. This year will have four (or five, if you count BH6). And it's only going to get worse. If Marvel continues at their two a year pace, and continues their plans to ramp up to a movie every year, and Sony does the same as they've indicated. AND WB gets their program running so they've got a movie or two hitting every year... we'll be looking at 5+ superhero films every year.

Something has to give in that regard. Audiences may like the films, but nothing lasts forever, and eventually interest is going to plateau. Sure, Spider-Man was king, but this is the fifth film about just him in in twelve years. He's had the longest sustained presence of any superhero beside Wolverine (and even he basically had a gap of six years between the two solo films.) It makes sense that Spidey's going to be the first to feel some disinterest.

Nothing lasts forever. If it did, westerns would probably still be the biggest hits around.

ASM made 119 mill after its first five days.  If ASM opens to 90, it will probably settle in at less than 105 for 5 days.

Spin that Sony/Deadline/Nikki/SHH/anyone else without a brain

Kind of weird how it is titled "Bad Neighbours" in most countries, and just "Neighbors" in the US. The poster and marketing kind of makes sure that everyone knows that the neighbors hate each other, but wonder how the marketing and title decisions are made worldwide.

Except that Marvel films continue to grow.  Every single Avengers sequel that has been released has increased from the last one starting with IM3.  So where is the fatigue there?  Maybe there's just Spider-man fatigue.

Don't include Nikki in that. She's not buying it, lol.

Box Office Analysis: 'Amazing Spider-Man 2' opening good but not gargantuan. Meh reviews, story leaks, fanboy criticism won't help.

I think it's more bad Spider-Man movie fatigue.

Okay, good for Nikki, seriously.  Glad someone isn't buying into this Sony spin.

The movie isn't bad, lol.

It certainly isn't good. But obviously, it's a little too early for this movies quality to affect it much just yet. Rather, the last movie was bad, and this one is paying a price on its OW. It's legs will pay the price for the current films quality.
