Tuesday #s 12/23 | Hobbit3 $9.8M | Merry Christmas All!

Recommended Posts

All movies (apart from PK which will likely stay flat or fall slightly) will most likely fall 35-40% today with good increases tomorrow.

You're obviously far more familiar with tracking Bollywood releases here. I'm assuming PK would be flat because Indian audiences won't be affected as much by Christmas Eve?

Yup. Last year Dhoom 3 became the only movie in the last half decade to actually increase on Christmas Eve. Since Hindu, Sikh and other south Asian communities don't celebrate Christmas, families will use the time to watch movies together.

BoxOffice.com's 4 day projection for Unbroken is too high.  Can't believe they honestly think it will make 33-35 million over its 4 days.  That's outrageous. They must be thinking this will interest religious crowds like The Passion of The Christ did.

A day away from 4 wide releases and the only movie the press and media seem to be talking about is a 300 theater limited release. Don't think that bodes well for interest in the other movies.

Well its probably not going to be a huge weekend for any of the new openers but thats been the story for the last 6 months of 2014.

Well the book is a huge bestseller, so I think their numbers are solid.

Wasn't "Wild" a huge bestselling book?  But nobody thinks that will make 100 domestic.  Isn't The Mortal Instruments a bestselling book series?

The first Mortal Instruments had only sold 4 million copies before the film came out, and Wild was a good best seller.

Unbroken however was on the top of the chart for like 100 weeks or something. It was a huge bestseller, I don't know if that will translate into big movie ticket sales, but will see.

Also Wild was released given limited release at first, and Unbroken is being released on more than 2000 screens opening weekend, so it's a different story altogether.

No name actors for Unbroken.  A 50% score on RT is not gonna cut it for an adult drama.  Adult drama is the one genre where critics reviews really affect the box office total.  Audiences for silly comedies will show up no matter what the reviews are, but not for dramas.  A week before The Judge was released, BoxOffice.com had it projected to make 78 million domestic.  It ended up with only 47.  Same thing will apply here.  BO.com is projecting 120 domestic for Unbroken, but it will finish in the 80s.

And again that's just your prediction. None of us really know how well Unbroken will do dude. It's not like we can look into the future or something (I wish we could though).
