Recommended Posts

mine updated in order of rank

only revenant unseen. rest are all seen e.g. joy had incredible reception in test screenings, as did hateful eight recently.

1. the revenant (only one unseen)

2. joy

3. spotlight

4. carol

5. brooklyn

6. inside out

7. bridge of spies

8. the hateful eight

9. son of saul

10. beasts of no nation

alts - room

You forgot Steve Jobs. And technically The Revenant is seen. It tested too.

But you can't call The Revenant, Joy or The Hateful Eight as actually being seen. They were test screenings and they might not reflect the final product. Let's take them all to AFI!!

in the heart of the sea - early screenings got excellent reviews so it has a shot at a nom esp if the box office is healthy enough.

brooklyn looks vulnerable as box office will be shit.

Why the lack of confidence for Room? I think it is the kind of little movie that will get a lot of #1 votes. It won at TIFF, it has a lot of raves and it surely will be widely seen during the critics awards.

1. Revenant

2. Joy

3. Spotlight

4. Carol

5. Room

6. Steve Jobs

7. Brooklyn

8. Inside Out

9. Bridge of Spies

10. Hateful Eight

Still in the run

11. Danish girl

12. Son of Saul

13. The martian

14. Mad Max

15. Beasts of no nation

The Revenant

Steve Jobs

Bridge of Spies

Carol

Joy

Spotlight

Inside Out

Youth

Possible big blockbusting gatecrasher - The Martian (alt. Mad Max)

That brings it to 8 (possibly 9)... I'm sure there'll be something unexpected that surprises us all at the last minute. The Revenant is still largely unknown, and whilst it looks the part it could very well be a messy disaster. Pretty sure the Leo factor will help either way though.

Where didyou see the excellent reviews for itHotS?

Brooklyn's BO remains to be unveiled, but I think it will surprise many and be a hit, grossing over 30M). Anyways, Brooklyn is the type of film that can get traction with Oscars even with poor BO. Every year we have 1-3 films nominated despite grossing less than 20M.

Last March I predicted the sum of the BO gross of all nominees this year will let the average gross to be over 100M before the nominations are even announced. I am now more confident with this statement

Inside Out 355M before nominations

Hateful eight 130M

Joy 120M

Bridge of Spies 100M

Steve Jobs 95M

Revenant 85M

Spotlight 55M

Carol 35M

Brooklyn 15M

Room 10M

Room, Revenant and Brooklyn can easily go higher

Damn it! I read somewhere that nominations would be anounced 21st of January!

New predictions to succeed with my bold statement! Martian in instead of Hateful 8

Inside Out 355M

The Martian 200M

Joy 105M

Bridge of Spies 100M

Steve Jobs 90M

Revenant 45M

Spotlight 45M

Carol 35M

Brooklyn 15M

Room 10M

There you go!  :P

My prediction for the overall total of nominations for some movies:

The Revenant: 10 (Picture, Director, Actor, Supporting Actor, Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography, Editing, Production Design, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing)

The Martian: 9 (Picture, Director, Actor, Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography, Editing, Production Design, Visual Effects, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing)

The Hateful Eight: 8 (Picture, Director, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Original Screenplay, Cinematography, Score, Sound Editing)

Mad Max: 8 (Cinematography, Editing, Costume Design, Production Design, Score, Makeup, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing)

Joy: 7 (Picture, Director, Actress, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Original Screenplay, Editing)

Carol: 6 (Picture, Actress, Supporting Actress, Adapted Screenplay, Production Design, Costume Design)

Inside Out: 5 (Picture, Original Screenplay, Animated Feature, Score, Sound Editing)

Steve Jobs: 5 (Picture, Director, Actor, Supporting Actress, Adapted Screenplay)

Star Wars: 4 (Production Design, Score, Visual Effects, Sound Mixing)

Bridge of Spies: 3 (Picture, Supporting Actor, Original Screenplay)

Spotlight: 3 (Picture, Original Screenplay, Editing)

I'm this close to putting Mad Max in for Picture and Director, but I still don't know if the bigger branches will go for it.
