Dementeleus
Shit, I'm realizing I really half-assed my list. Several that I would've totally included had I thought of them.
4815162342
Shit, I'm realizing I really half-assed my list. Several that I would've totally included had I thought of them. Better than it being full-ass I did a full 100 and there's films on the countdown I slipped my mind on or just fell outside the 100. I'll do one last set later tonight after Game of Thrones. The Panda
Very glad about Ben-Hur's inclusion. Wrath of Khan is fine to make it but I'd honestly just say Motion Picture should be given the spot.
Blankments
Newman's Pixar works are always great; he's still doing Good Dinosaur, right? Crazy he hasn't won an Oscar; I wonder if my favorite work of his (a recent one from a movie that got pretty quickly forgotten) will make this list
Avatree
Shit, I completely forgot about Studio Ghibli when I wrote my list. Oh well. Trust me, reserve all statements of utter disbelief for later. Something is coming. Transformers? It has a distinctive enough theme for people to put it on their lists. :/ Edited April 27, 2015 by tree - we're home
TalismanRing
More on my list - Ben Hur, King Kong, Wizard of Oz, Edward Scissorhands and oh yes The Natural. The only superhero score I voted for is Superman The Movie and it's high on my list.
Goffe
I forgot to include Bernard Herrmann's Vertigo in my list, what a shame, I hope the score is in this. Edited April 27, 2015 by Goffe
4815162342
65. Cloud Atlas (2012) Original Music by Tom Tykwer, Reinhold Heil, and Johnny Klimek 183 Points Top 10 Placements: 1 Top 5 Placements: 1 Wins Tiebreaker Over Wrath of Khan due to Number of Votes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8VpvncEuEg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OoO8P9EVMaE Cloud Atlas was certainly a divisive film amongst the general audience as well as this forum, but one thing about it that got pretty universal praise here was its music. Co-Director Tom Tykwer and a couple of his buddies collaborated to compose a sweeping musical prose that has to juggle several different time periods and thematic moods.
4815162342
64. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (2007) Original Music by Hans Zimmer 185 Points Top 10 Placements: 2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dv6pJ2D_Sek https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QwaZ8zjHNpg One of the big 21st Century franchises now shows up in the countdown with Zimmer's output from the third outing. For At World's End Zimmer continues to use the themes built over the prior outings but adds in some new twists and wrinkles to spice things up.
The Panda
Pirates is probably Zimmer's best score next to Gladiator (which is the rough foundation of Pirates)
4815162342
62A. The Mission (1986) Original Music by Ennio Morricone 193 Points Top 10 Placements: 2 Top 5 Placements: 1 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ig11H_zO5Ik Ennio Morricone returns to the countdown with his work for The Mission. This is a score that for me is built around its sad core theme, a mellow, wistful woodwind piece that reflects the simple, peaceful world one of the main characters wishes to build in the New World against all odds. 62B. Mullholland Drive (2001) Original Music by Angelo Badalamenti 193 Points Top 10 Placements: 1 Top 5 Placements: 1 #1 Placements: 1 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJlm_ON1_Mo Mullholland Drive is, true to form for David Lynch, a mindtrip of a movie. His frequent collaborator Angelo Badalamenti conjures up some fairly haunting music to accompany the twisty proceedings, echoing the darkness that lurks behind diners and within the characters themselves. Both films tied on the Top 10 tiebreaker points Edited April 27, 2015 by Numbers of Westeros
Walt Disney
Cloud Atlas made the list and is number 65 *eye roll*. That's the one where I just throw my hands up. Star Trek II being so low is my fault because I didn't have it on my list. I went with Star Trek: The Motion picture instead. In retrospect, Wrath of Khan should have been the choice there instead. Edit: I was wrong. I was very very wrong and spoke too soon. I just saw Mulholland Drive made the list. Truly the biggest piece of trash ever made. 4815162342
61. Forrest Gump (1994) Original Music by Alan Silvestri 193 Points Top 10 Placements: 2 Top 5 Placements: 2 Wins Tiebreaker over The Mission and Mullholland Drive due to Top 10 Placement Score Tiebreaker https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FcOt6mfjxeA Forrest Gump's music is more known for its mix of licensed songs stretching from the 50s through the 80s, but Alan Silvestri's instrumental work provides the emotional and thematic backbone for the whole enterprise. The well-known main theme presents a tone of wistful yearning, much like Forrest himself. It's not complicated music, but it does a very good job of striking at the center of its target emotional response. That is all for today. I will resume countdown sets tomorrow evening at some point. Cloud Atlas made the list and is number 65 *eye roll*. That's the one where I just throw my hands up. Star Trek II being so low is my fault because I didn't have it on my list. Avatree
Pirates 3? I'm guessing Pirates 2 and Pirates 1 are higher, then.
Walt Disney
You know you weren't prevented from picking both... True. I should have done that. I was trying to limit myself to 1 movie per franchise if I could. I broke the rule with Star Wars, Indiana Jones, The Godfather, James Bond, and Rocky. But, I was trying not to go franchise crazy. However, in retrospect, this was one I wish I didn't leave out. I take responsibility for this one. But, at least it made the list.
