'Happy Feet Two' Dances Way to Top Sales Spot

The approach of Spring Break continues to find studios stepping up their release schedules of high-profile titles, as Hollywood home video marketers take aim at out-of-school kids and their Easter gift-giving parents.

Three new releases landed in the top three slots on the weekly Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart, which tracks all disc sales at most big retailers except Walmart and Sam’s Club, as well as Nielsen’s dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart for the week ended March 18.

On the overall sales chart, Warner Home Video’s Happy Feet Two, which earned $64 million in U.S. theaters, debuted at No. 1. Paramount’s The Adventures of Tintin ($77.6 million) bowed at No. 2 and 20th Century Fox’s The Descendants ($82 million) debuted at No. 3.

The first two films are animated family features; Descendants is an Oscar-winning dramatic comedy that stars George Clooney in a critically hailed performance as a wealthy father who tries to reconnect with his daughters after his wife is seriously injured in a boating accident.

On the Blu-ray Disc sales chart, all three films also captured the top three spots, albeit in a different order. The top-selling Blu-ray Disc was Adventures of Tintin, with Descendants following at No. 2 and Happy Feet Two trailing at No. 3.

Accordingly, Nielsen research shows Tintin generated 50% of its sales from the Blu-ray Disc format, compared to 32% for Descendants and just 23% for Happy Feet Two.

On Home Media Magazine’s weekly video rental chart, Adventures of Tintin was an easy winner, in part due to the fact that Paramount doesn’t delay shipping its new releases to rental dealers.

Sony Pictures’ Jack and Jill slipped to No. 2 after two weeks in the top spot, followed by another new release, Summit Entertainment’s The Three Musketeers, which debuted at No. 3.

'Chipwrecked' Lands Atop Sales Charts

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment topped the national home video sales charts the week ended April 1 with Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked, the third installment in the hugely successful franchise of CGI/live-action feature films based on the animated chipmunk characters created for a 1958 novelty record.

The film grossed $132 million in theaters, significantly less than its two predecessors, both of which made more than $200 million. But that’s still a tidy sum, and Fox marketers can take pride in the fact that Chipwrecked bumped Walt Disney’s The Muppets from the No. 1 spot on both the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert chart, which tracks overall disc sales, and Nielsen’s dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart.

The Muppets finished its second week in stores at No. 3 on both charts, behind Universal Studios’ Hop, an Easter-themed family film that finished its second week in stores at No. 2. Hop debuted at No. 3 on both charts the prior week but was released on a Friday instead of the traditional Tuesday, so its first-week sales tally only consisted of three rather than six days.

A second new release, Warner’s Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, debuted at No. 4 on First Alert and No. 5 on the Blu-ray Disc chart. The 9/11 drama, about a boy who lost his dad in the World Trade Center attack, earned just under $32 million in theaters but stars Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock and was nominated for Best Picture at the recent Oscars.

On Home Media Magazine’s weekly rental chart, the three top rentals haven’t changed from the prior week: Sony Pictures’ The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo at No. 1, Universal Studios’ Tower Heist at No. 2 and Sony Pictures’ Jack and Jill at No. 3.

Chipwrecked didn’t make the rental chart because Fox withholds new releases from rental kiosks for 28 days.

I get the Easter release but waiting nearly a year to release Hop just seems dumb

I don´t think it would have done much better if it were released last year
