in general yes because pricing is radically different than 15 years ago.

!5 years ago you basically had no 3D, no premium seating and not much IMAX.

Now you have all of those and most of the revenue for those formats is generated in the first 2 weeks before those formats move on to the next contracted release for those formats.

Nothing in MI5 performance to this point suggests it will get anywhere near 200M, though we really need to watch about another week before I think you can say that will be the case. Somewhere around 175M looks like the most likely outcome given its current 1st week numbers. it's going to need a large weekend to change that thought process as the weekdays were solid but unspectacular. The odds would be against it right now, but lets wait and see what the weekend holds.

It also depends on it's competitor, the FF reboot. As of now...that movie has gotten appauling WOM from critics and audience alike.

Weekend is looking rough :(

  • F4: $28.5 million
  • MI5: $26 million ($105 million)
  • The Gift: $10 million
  • Ricki and the Flash: $8.5 million
  • Vacation: $8 million ($36 million)
  • Minions: $7.5 million ($302 million)
  • Ant-Man: $7 million ($146 million)
  • Pixels: $6.5 million ($59 million)
  • Trainwreck: $6 million ($91 million)
  • Shaun the Sheep Movie: $5.5 million ($7 million)
Next weekend could be worse if Compton is sub-$30 million and UNCLE is sub-$20 million. Fall can't come soon enough
Compton should save the rut, and should make it's money this month as the top grosser this year for August. UNCLE should open in between Spy and Kingsman or at least 25 million. Other than that there's nothing else out. This August so far in 6 days has been possibly the worst August since 2012. Edited by Maxmoser3

Weren't numbers okay throughout the week?

GOP debate is a more valid reason. People watch that sort of thing regardless of who's involved.

Actually it did have a huge effect. 24 million people tuned in for the debate, which is the highest ranked non sports telecast in history. Best previous debate was democrat promary with 10 million views. It obliterated the record and definitely had a big effect on box office.
