Sorry for the blunt obviousness, but it just goes to show how meaningless all of this is. Why should Friday even be counted as a weekend day? It certainly isn't one. Yet for the purposes of counting box-office, at some point it was determined that it should be included, and so it was. Movies didn't used to have midnight shows (the same day as release only as a technicality), and then at some point it was determined that they should be included, and so it was. Now we have preview shows that start on Thursday evening, and it's been decided that they'll be included, and so they are.

Everything else is just nitpicking, and for what real purpose? The only thing all this indicates is how release patterns are changing.

Yeah just the way it is. Like Sept Oct Nov and Dec mean 7 8 9 10 and they are the 9th 10th 11th and 12th months. been that way for 2000 years and most people don't notice any more.

Sorry, had a throw a history lesson in there.

Things just change and we roll with.

It had way fewer marathons than most Marvel movies, the Hunger Games saga, etc. Those usually had 30-40 shows or more, when I tracked their Thursday previews. Star Wars had 8.

I didn't see this response. Then why would they make mention of these marathons in the reports on the films grosses? I don't remember this with THG or AOU

Oh c'mon man. Don't mention meaninglessness on an internet forum. I don't hang around here much and nitpicking over records seems to be half the fun. It's not a nitpick to observe that a "single day" doesn't exceed 24 hours. Mojo's reporting aside, TFA didn't make 119M in a single day. That's simply a fact.

Anyway, I had no idea it bothered people. I'm certainly not rooting against TFA. I very much hope to see the first 1B domestic run by Jan.

Can you show me where this is reported?

It's not reported, it's folded into the general Thursday gross. All I can offer is the data from my tracking sheets:

Ultron - 42 marathon shows out of 748 total

Catching Fire - 46 marathons out of 481 total

Mockingjay, Pt 1 - 40 marathons out of 435 total

Hobbit 3 - 48 marathons out of 378 total

Star Wars - 8 marathons out of 969 total

They rarely sellout, because they start at odd hours at best and/or take up most of a workday (at worst).

It doesn't really bother me, I just get surprised when people decide to arbitrarily parse the data to fit some defined system when it's all really nebulous to begin with. Mojo doesn't do the reporting, the studios give out the numbers. The studios get to call Friday part of a weekend. They decide to call May a summer month. They decide to allow Thursday night previews to be considered part of Friday's gross.

In this particular case, it seems odd to single Star Wars out because since it had shows round the clock, a solid chunk of them would've technically been within Friday (since they would've come after midnight). On the other hand, maybe some of the super-late Friday shows should've been called Saturday.

If you want to fight that fight, go ahead, I suppose. But the rest of the box-office world will basically just play the studio's game because at the end of the day, that's all we have.

With 38M+ on Tuesday, SW7 has surpassed AOTC (310M+). Next up ROTS at 380M+, which should be dethroned by Thursday and TPM/ANH should follow by Saturday. It'll take 9 days to beat all of the previous installments. Fucking amazing!!!!!!

Interesting. It's not even worth mentioning according to this. It's just hard to believe with my knowledge of this fan base that the marathons would not absolutely dwarf the other franchises you mention. Maybe Potter or Twilight, but I just don't see it with Marvel or THG.

Again, all I can offer are the numbers I collected from my general area. For what it's worth, the Star Wars marathons had more sellouts than the others, but even then they only had 4 total.
