terrestrial
Sooo, and another hint to get the hopes up not too high: 31 December and 1 January: Here the stores close down at 31 December at 12°°-13°° o'clock. Not sure if the foodstores are again allowed to stay open a few hours or not. Cinemas will close earlier than usual too, but not as early as the stores obviously (beside the ones positioned in a mall w/o an own entrance...) Stores... will stay closed down the entire 1 January, public facilities that usually are open during a Sunday or holiday might open late, if at all. Cinemas too will open late Yes, the time between the holidays is a good time, nut I am not sure till what max if the possible showings are reduced to a varying degree. Not saying that this is also counting for other countries or regions, but also companies should be aware about a high percentage of it's staff being hung-over or even reliable at work and might adjust accordingly to more human times. Might also depend on the size of the city. this is the next chart SW 7 will end on beside some 3rd... weekday's charts TOP HOLIDAY SINGLE DAY GROSSES - New Years Day Rank Title (click to view) Studio New Years Gross / % of Total Theaters / Average Day/Year Lifetime Gross 1 Avatar Fox $25,274,008 3.4% 3,461 $7,303 F 2010 $760,507,625 2 Meet the Fockers Uni. $18,271,940 6.5% 3,524 $5,185 Sa 2005 $279,261,160 3 Sherlock Holmes WB $14,889,882 7.1% 3,626 $4,106 F 2010 $209,028,679 4 Alvin .... stripe
33M in its 11th day. Awesome! Keep in mind... In December, only the OD of Hobbit AUJ and ROTK were barely bigger than this number (37.1M and 34.4M respectively). And it's the 11th day after burning 540M!!

TFA's ratio of DOM/OS is very high compared to other blockbusters lately, although China remains a wild card. Maybe the ratio will be lower for the sequels. Especially considering Rogue One is released a year before that stars Donnie Yen to raise awareness from the second biggest market. Another factor is if Rian Johnson somehow manages to make a movie so critically acclaimed that comparisons to ESB are being made - and if it somehow satisfies some narrative cliffhangers left behind by JJ Abrams. The perfect storm of a critically acclaimed trilogy, aided with Rogue One and Han Solo standalone movies might just push SW 9 over Avatar finally: that is, if Avatar 2-3-4 haven't already broken the records then. The dom / OS ratio I had a bit explained in the last thread. I think it's too early to even look at it for SW 7, as the movies we today can look at to compare it to, are all finalised runs and a lot are established ones, like by a famous director or cast (that does make an awarenaess impact), or movie series like the MCU (take a look at the ratio of early ones and the later ones, see e.g. IM), some runs had or have considerable competion by movies not released in the USA (tendency: strongly growing!) or the earlier mentioned strongly varying exchange rates, depending on year and country.... Basic condition is definitively SW 8 being of at least the same quality and accessabilty to the story... with something added w/o affront the fans, but that counts even more IMHO for Rogue One. One medium to bad movie in a series usually hurts the one after the bad one even more than the 'bad' one IMHO. Worldwide.

What Asian country other than China, Japan and South Korea really make a dent? And Avatar was already huge in all three of them (obviously China is a much more potent market today, that's where the growth will come from). Maybe it can tie the first one in SK. As for Latin America, there's potential there but if exchange rates don't get better the growth will be eaten up.

Can we actually know box office numbers from Indonesia? I watched TFA again in North Jakarta last Saturday for my fourth viewing. It only played in one studio despite the show being full even to the first row (and it was only the second weekend!). It had three studios playing Ip Man 3, but I'm not sure how well it performed. Then again, this is North Jakarta we're talking about - the audience was very quiet, only several laughs in some scenes. It's so unlike the scene in South Jakarta, especially on the first day. (Imax 3D weekdays were full for my third viewing) Meanwhile my friend in Surabaya reported that TFA showings there are quite empty after the first weekend. I guess TFA is only popular in some parts of Jakarta (South especially)...
terrestrial
Ha! There is a chart for 8 titles too (usually only at max. 6 titles are possible to pick)! Titanic ends 120+ days later with ~ +$100m, it's final is ~ as high as JW's Endpoint on the graph. But: ~ $57m out of those are via the 2012 re-release, so the first run of the unchanged movie is rather exact crossing with the $600m marking. Avatar has $15m more than to see on the graph, but $10m are out of the special edition re-release. The details for those two movies count for all graphs looking rather similar to this one and have one or both of the movies added, no matter who might post them. I am from the Philippines.! Ha ha. TFA's run here has been cut to give way to a terrible film festival. It comes back on January 8th. You can get box office updates from BOM but their overseas section sucks.

And Avatar was already huge in all three of them (obviously China is a much more potent market today, that's where the growth will come from). Maybe it can tie the first one in SK. As for Latin America, there's potential there but if exchange rates don't get better the growth will be eaten up. Not really a dent but you know increases from emerging markets will help a lot. For example, AVATAR made 5 M plus here, by 2017 it could make 15 M. Yes, that's just 10 M increase but imagine if other territories in Southeast Asia mirror that. India can contribute too and of course Brazil. But I get your point, China will be the key here. Edited December 29, 2015 by kayumanggi
