Wouldn't September/October be the time period to dump a movie? Not August.

No January, and August are generally viewed as the dumps month, although that may be starting to change a bit, especially August.

Ah, wom? Social media? TV? Movies are out at least for 3 months. They have enough time to decide.

If a movie doesn't open strong enough then it's not going to do that well in most cases.

Unless it's Oscar-bait season.

Plus a small opening will minimize WOM because few people will actually see the movie.

I know most everyone is ripping on IDR but can you guys keep the spoilers out? what if I didn't want to know that there was some dude waving the Chinese flag at the airport? I'd like to go in blind and just see how stupid she really is all on my own without any foreshadowing from you guys.

You can't "spoil" something already rotten. The biggest spoiler of all would actually be seeing the movie. And lmfao at IDR dropping even further on Friday. 40 is out and I'm all aboard the BVS under 2x multi train. Burn baby burn.

Yay at Dory and Shallows. Riding the waves.

Jurassic World. You also technically didn't need to make more Star Wars movies

Okay, how about sequels no one asked for since "unnecessary sequel" is obviosly too subjective.

What does The Space Between Us have to do with Passengers' release date? If Rogue One didn't make it move, I doubt this will.

They're two sci-fi movies on the same exact date, and STX is a new studio with not a whole lot of money. Maybe they know Passengers won't be ready?

Huge drop from the first film, but My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2's close to $60M domestic was triple its reported production budget.

Really don't buy "People didnt see IDR because Will Smith wasnt in it". Nobody gives a crap about Will Smith anymore. Dude hasnt had a domestic hit since Hancock 6 years ago.

If if you're going to make a sequel. Might as well bring back the break out star of the original. It's like making Top Gun 2 without Cruise

What if Shallows pulled like 19m and a 4x multi and IDR 37m and a 2x multi? Shallows beating IDR DOM would be the most hilariously awesome thing all year.

ID4R is already going to struggle to beat Angry Birds. How many people here had Angry Birds over ID4R at the beginning of the summer?

Maybe no one, but that movie was still expected to do at least 100m+. Shallows wasn't expected to do anything. If Shallows goes over 20 this weekend and IDR under 38, I'm starting the club. Shallows could totally get almost twice as good a multi as IDR.

If Finding Dory follows TS3 for its entire run its going to end at $524m. Seems possible given both films had amazing word of mouth

At that point all the Nolanites here will be on the edge of their seat in sheer horror/outrage. :P

Finding Dory doesn't have AMAZING wom like TS3 did.

It has a far less crowded summer to its advantage though, and TS3 released in the heart of the 3D backlash which I'm 100% certain to this day affected its multi. There's really no reason it shouldn't have been pulling an easy 4x back in 2010 with its reception, but everyone shunned 3D that summer right when theaters were forcing it down the GA's throats the most. I remember it being very hard to find 2D showing of 3D films that summer-holiday. Anyways, point being that Dory doesn't need as good of WOM to have a TS3 multi, and it has great WOM anyways. Pets will be the only thing that could stop it from 500+ heights.
