HELL OR HIGH WATER

Directed by David Mackenzie

Lionsgate/CBS

The western genre is known to be formulaic from time to time, but it has been experiencing revitalizations through western stories set in modern times, such as Longmire and No Country for Old Men. And the next modern western story, Hell or High Water, not only follows in the footsteps of western predecessors new and old, but sets itself apart with its outstanding dialogue and unique, realistic themes. The film follows two Texan brothers who rob many banks in order to have their revenge on the corrupt bank systems and to protect their land, even if the law becomes dead-set on following their tracks and pursuing their justice. Directed by David Mackenzie, written by Taylor Sheridan, and deftly acted by Chris Pine, Ben Foster, Jeff Bridges, and Gil Birmingham, as well as all of the other fine cast members, Hell or High Water isn't afraid to be something different from the rest of the pack. During the runtime, camaraderie makes the audience care for the characters while tension keeps a firm grip, and before they know it, viewers are invested in a film that is sweet as sarsaparilla, clever as a fox, and prickly as a cactus. It is a new kind of western film, and it's a film that will influence films of this new and peculiar western subgenre in the years to come.

Hell or High Water is the surprise gem of 2016. After premiering at Cannes, the movie had a strong limited release and continued doing well as it went wider. In fact, it’s the second highest grossing indie film of 2016 behind BOFFY-nominated Manchester by the Sea. Hell or High Water is the perfect throwback to a genre that has been fading too much.

Hell or High Water follows the story of two brothers, Toby (BOFFY Nominee Chris Pine) and Tanner (BOFFY Nominee Ben Foster). Their family land is undergoing a foreclosure. Wanting to provide a better life for his family, Toby enlists the help of his brother to rob the banks that are taking away the land. However, these robberies catch the attention of Ranger Marcus Hamilton (BOFFY Nominee Jeff Bridges), who is on the verge of retirement and seeking a final case to end his career. Will the brothers steal enough money, or will Hamilton catch them and put them in jail?

The film’s strongest points come in its characters. Screenwriter Taylor Sheridan, who is up for Best Original Screenplay at the BOFFIEs, writes each of his characters with a distinct personality. Toby is a reserved man who doesn’t want to go through with these actions, but must do so for the wellbeing of his kids. In contrast, Tanner is hyper and gets a kick out of robbing banks, but he also knows how much getting the money means to Toby. Chris Pine and Ben Foster play these characters with so much humanity despite doing dirty deeds, and we can’t help but root for them to succeed.

Another relationship explored in Hell or High Water comes with Marcus Hamilton and Alberto Parker (Gil Birmingham). Like the brothers, both rangers are dedicated to their task. However, neither man gets along too well. Hamilton often makes racist remarks towards Parker, and both men often get into long, bickering fights. Despite all their quarrels, the rangers have a deep respect for one another, but Hamilton doesn’t realize just how fond he is of Parker until a turning point in the film.

Sheridan’s dialogue shines the most in the film’s final scene. Without diving too deep into spoilers, the final scene is intense and riveting. The final showdown is a conversation between two of the film’s characters, and not a single bullet is fired. The two characters speaking in this scene get an equal amount of time to shine and grab the audience, but neither comes out as the winner. To paraphrase one of Jeff Bridges’s characters, the ending really ties the movie together and concludes the movie on a high note.

Hell or High Water is a strong film that lives on strong screenwriting and great acting. It’s intense, emotional, and just plain fun to watch unfold. This is a film that definitely deserves its spot among these ten nominees.

You disappoint me Coolio.

Peter morgan is not a good writer. I've had my suspicions since the queen but every new project confirms it. and Lizzy should call his ass and ask him to stop writing his weird fanfic about her. because like his fictional version of the queen is so... strange. if either of them had twitter accounts he'd be the type of guy who replies "MOM!!!" to everything she tweets.
