RED CRESCENT TO RE-TEAM WITH TAKASHI MIIKE IN Y5 FOR 'ONE MISSED CALL' REBOOT

Prolific cult-favorite Japanese filmmaker Takashi Miike, currently directing Red Crescent's surprise horror sequel Silent Hill: Restless Dreams, will collaborate with the studio again next year as a producer for their reboot of One Missed Call. Miike directed the original Japanese version of the film in 2003. Though Miike's film was a success in its home country, spawning two sequels and a television spinoff, the 2008 American remake was universally panned. After a troubled production and major last-minute changes - including the replacement of most of the scares with hastily-done CGI effects and censorship to lower the rating from R to PG-13 - director Eric Valette's English-language adaptation scored a 0% on RottenTomatoes and a 24 on Metacritic; RottenTomatoes went on to rank it the second-worst film of the decade. It opened in fifth place at the US box office and grossed a mediocre $26.9 million total ($34.7m adjusted).

Because of that film's failure, Red Crescent head Xander Newton stresses the fact the upcoming project is not a remake. "It's very much a reboot," he assured us in an exclusive interview. "We're not using the same plot or characters as the first movie or the 2008 one. I think that was a good story when it was done right, but the remake did it so badly that it's basically ruined for American audiences. So we're taking, essentially, just the core concept - the idea you get a call and hear your own death, exactly as it's going to happen, and you know exactly when your time is up. So what do you do to try and stop it, or to get to the bottom of it and find out where this is all coming from?"

Newton adds that the new film will incorporate certain aspects of the Japanese film's sequels as well, though it is not directly adapting any particular film in the franchise and will tell an original story with new characters. There's still no title for the upcoming project, as the studio wants to avoid the stigma of the One Missed Call name. Per Newton:

"We looked at going back to the Japanese title and re-translating it, but that doesn't really work. It was called Chakushin Ari, which doesn't really mean 'one missed call,' but it's hard to translate. Basically it's the message you got on your screen in Japan back before smartphones. It's closer to something like 'you've got a call' or 'a call has arrived' but neither of those make for good titles. So we'll have to come up with something else."

The as-yet-untitled reboot is tentatively aiming for a release in August Y5.

Endless Animation inks a deal with Laika, makers of Coraline and ParaNorman to produce a series of stop motion films similar to Dreamworks Animation/Aardman.

The two are doing a three picture deal, the first of one is tentatively titled “A Fool’s Errand”, directed by Chris Butler, about a blind jester who dreams of being a knight, must save his kingdom from an evil thought to be vanquished.
