blade runner won the cinematography guild. this is the 4th time Deakins has won that so i'm trying not to get my hopes up that this is his year still thinking shape of water can take it.

I'm conflicted because the cinematography in both films is amazing.

I still don't see Get Out having greater than a 5% chance at winning. Spotlight at least had a consistent presence in Original Screenplay at precursors (won WGA/BAFTA and was nominated at the Globes); Get Out's only precursor win is WGA where Three Billboards was ineligible, and it missed a Globe writing nomination.

I think Three Billboards is just gonna take it at this point and there's just no stopping it. The Golden Globes and becoming the most relevant movie to Time's Up is where it all began.

yeah i'm starting to come around to it for that reason. i don't think it has much to say about that at all but hollywood really seems to consider it The Times Up Movie. every speech they gave at the baftas related it to that in some way. and people using the three billboard "aesthetic" in social campaigns in america and britain probably only helps its campaign

I usually find it interesting to see what Best Picture nominees have the longest shelf lives after the ceremony and which ones just fade into obscurity. For example, I'm sure Call Me by Your Name and Phantom Thread will always be popular in cinephile circles, but something like Darkest Hour is likely to be largely forgotten about other than as being the film that finally won Gary Oldman his Oscar.

I think Birdman's actually my favorite BP winner from this past decade, but the irony is I was still mad when it won because it won against Boyhood.  None of the BP winners from this decade so far have been my pick to win so I'm hoping that changes and Shape of Water wins it this year.
