RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET | 328.2 M overseas ● 529.3 M worldwide

Not releasing it everywhere at the same time was a mistake, they lost any possibility of global momentum.

That and the fact that on OW in the US, it opened the exact same number as Moana & Big Hero 6, but with lesser DOM-legs. $56M OW to be exact.

Maybe it was probably undermarketed for it to have this standard opening for a Disney film. Hence why OS isn’t exploding Big Hero 6 or Zootopia-style either.

When you know the fact that a Disney-sequel (never mind Pixar) opened with exactly $56M (same OW as Moana & Big Hero 6), being the third November-Disney film in a row....and with lesser opening & DOM-gross than Illumination’s The Grinch (which opened at $67M, still at nearly $266M DOM & $470M WW), then clearly something’s wrong with the marketing Disney animated movies. Can’t always rely  only on quality from previous Disney films without awareness.

At least Universal does a lot better job with their marketing on their animated movies.

Always thought it was weird they made a sequel In the first place. The first wasn’t that big of a hit and not really remembered that much six years later

They saw some potential and desperately tried to launch the characters as much as they could. In the movie Vanellope is some kind of a princess, and Ralph is a bozo that makes people laugh with memes and viral videos. But all of that is so "artificial" (the princess thing included) that it just didn't work: it gained some initial interest (OWs are pretty strong everywhere) just to fall very quickly at the first competition.

500M worldwide is still possible, right? or will just tap out at around 430M-450M?

Maybe if the kept March release date, it would have performed better

It will definitely cross $500 million WW but maybe not until France opens in mid-February. Has about $25 million or so left domestically and OS holdovers should add at least $50 million given major remaining players are very leggy like Japan and Australia. Conservatively, the remaining markets left to open could add $80-90 million in total if Ralph 2 merely matches the first film. On the higher end, I can see $110-120 million from the markets left to open if it follows closer to Moana.

Ralph Breaks The Internet broke the $400m global barrier as $29.7m boosted the animation’s tally to $404.8m, while $25m from 32 territories resulted in $217.6m at the international box office. China remains the lead market on $39m, followed by Japan on $24.5m, then the UK on $20.1m.

The family release opened in Italy on $8.2m over six days in a new mark for any Disney Animation or Pixar release. A four-day $5.5m number one debut in South Korea delivered the third highest Disney Animation, and has already reached 93% of the 2012 original’s final gross.

A $4.8m number one debut in Brazil was good enough for the highest launch by a Disney Animation title, and the highest industry animated debut during the summer season. Argentina produced the third highest debut by a Disney Animation title in admissions and scored $1.4m. Ralph Breaks The Internetranks as the second highest grossing Disney Animation Studios release in Thailand and Hong Kong.

I won't hide it, I expected more than $500m WW for Ralph 2, they were on the right path with all the princesses in it but somehow they messed up when the movie released..even Disney is not immune to poor marketing.

How much do you think it will gross in France next week?

That and the competitive Universal/Illumination’s marketing are way better because there’s more confidence in what the selling point is..and that they know what to do. Disney can’t just rely on great goodwill from their past films to sell their next film. Marketing is important too. And that Thanksgiving-slot isn’t always encouraging when a $56M OW for ”Ralph 2” is the same number that Moana & Big Hero 6 did...just with worse legs.

What’s wrong with putting your classics the summer, Disney? Other animated studios put their films there.

The first one was one of the weakest Disney animated movies in France ($14m), in a country where these movies do well. I expect this one to do more, it has more appeal, the question is...to which extent? $20m would be nice.
