4815162342
#90 If Beale Street Could Talk (2018) Composed by Nicholas Britell 226 Points Top 10 Placements: 3 Coming in at #90 is our first newly eligible film, which is also the most recent film on the Top 100. Britell's work for the film was one of the aspects most raved about on the forum when awards season was in full swing. While the first newly eligible film on the Top 100, it is not the only one. Which brings us to...
4815162342
#89 Blade Runner 2049 (2017) Composed By Benjamin Wallfisch & Hans Zimmer 228 Points Top 5 Placements: 3 Next up is the long-awaited sequel to a film that has shown up on the Top 100 multiple times. Johan Johansson was originally slated to compose for the film, but Villeneuve decided to shift tonal direction of the music, which led to a change of composers. The music definitely carries with it that Zimmer bombast so famous (or infamous) while trying to link it with the synths that permeated the original movie.
4815162342
#88 Henry V (1989) Composed By Patrick Doyle 229 Points Top 10 Placements: 1 Henry V returns to the countdown after a temporary absence, having hit #44 in 2015, but missing entirely in 2017. This was Patrick Doyle's first outing as a film composer and his collaborations with Branagh helped launch him into a long and fruitful career. Doyle's voice is the one first heard singing in the above-shown track. 5
4815162342
#87 The Right Stuff (1983) Composed by Bill Conti 229 Points Top 5 Placements: 1 Vote Tiebreaker over Henry V Next up is The Right Stuff, which gets the tiebreaker over Henry V due to having more votes. Bill Conti's music delves heavily into soaring aeronautical cues and motifs, including references to various US military band compositions. The score for the film was never released on its own until 2013, and had to be created from the album mix from a scrapped release thirty years earlier, as the original masters for the score recording had been lost. 4815162342
#86 The Ten Commandments (1956) Composed by Elmer Bernstein 230 Points Top 10 Placements: 2 Filling out this pod of five is one of the old school epics of the 50s and 60s. Bernstein, who was relatively unknown at the time, was initially hired to write only diegetic music for the film, but when the original composer had to step down due to ill health, Bernstein stepped in. Bernstein's music samples unusual instruments for an orchestra, such as a shofar, and was crafted to emulate the melodramatic style of Wagnerian opera. Though it dropped over 20 spots from 2017, the film had a solid finish. Bernstein will return multiple times to this countdown. #85-81 will be posted tomorrow afternoon, as I will be traveling in the morning.
4815162342
#85 Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007) Composed by Hans Zimmer 232 Points Top 5 Placements: 1 Top 10 Placements: 1 Making another appearance on the Top 100 is the third entry of the PotC franchise. It stays almost flat from 2017 and presages a fair amount more of Hans Zimmer to come. Director Gore Verbinksi contributed a bit to the composing, as well as playing a guitar for some of the pieces. 5
4815162342
#84 Sunshine (2007) Composed by John Murphy and Underworld 234 Points Another 2007 film shows up with Danny Boyle's Sunshine. This is another film that has experienced severe whiplash with the Top 100, having almost cracked the top 50 in 2015, and then dropping off the countdown entirely in 2017. The music was heavily inspired by the work of György Ligeti, whose work had been featured in 2001: A Space Odyssey. The main cues for Sunshine have lived on as featured music for various film trailers. Edited July 7, 2019 by 4815162342
4815162342
#83 Koyaanisqatsi (1983) Composed by Philip Glass 245 Points Top 10 Placements: 1 Next comes one of the more unique films to have its music featured in the Top 100. Though it has dropped 40 places from 2017, the movie still has a fervent core following. Glass relied heavily on the minimalist score of music composition for his work on this, utilizing heavily repeating patterns and a simple tonal structure to hammer the imagery. 4815162342
#82 North by Northwest (1959) Composed by Bernard Herrmann 249 Points Top 10 Placements: 1 Legendary composer Bernard Herrmann shows up for the first, and not the last, time. Though it drops nearly 40 spots compared to 2017, it still has a higher placement than its 2015 debut on the Top 100. The music relies heavily on thrumming and pounding horns and drums to convey an almost relentless pace and tension that follows Cary Grant everywhere as he falls deeper and deeper into a realm of conspiracy.
4815162342
#81 The Mission (1986) Composed by Ennio Morricone 258 Points Top 10 Placements: 1 Another legendary composer makes his first appearance, with Ennio Morricone due to return for additional films as well. Morricone structured the main cues of the score to be an interweaving of themes written for the Spanish and indigenous peoples. The main cue featuring a solo oboe has become well-remembered amongst score aficionados. Like a number of films from the mid-range of the 2017 countdown, this film score also had a notable drop in the rankings. #80-76 will be posted this evening. 5
4815162342
#80 Beauty and the Beast (1991) Composed by Alan Menken 262 Points The steep drops from 2017 continue, with the highest precipice of the Disney Renaissance falling almost 50 spots. Alan Menken's work for the film is able to avoid the pitfalls of many movie musicals that rely too much on the separate songs to carry the weight of the incidental music. 5
4815162342
#79 La La Land (2016) Composed by Justin Hurwitz 264 Points Top 10 Placements: 1 Speaking of musicals, we return to the 2010s with the film that took half of BOT by storm in 2016. Some of the shine has worn off though, with a nearly 40 rank drop from 2017. The film score, while also sampling much of the songs to carry their particular motifs through in various scenes, has its own main romantic theme as the centerpiece. 6
4815162342
#78 Spartacus (1960) Composed by Alex North 266 Points Top 10 Placements: 1 We shift back to the sword and sandal epics of Hollywood's older days. North when composing the score utilized a number of antique kinds of instrument, which while not true to the Roman setting, lent an ancient atmosphere to the music. North also used an early version of an electronic synthesizer, which helped lay a foundation for future use of that style of music.
4815162342
#77 Escape from New York (1981) Composed by John Carpenter 268 Points We jump from a film score that pioneered to some degree the sampling of electronic synthesizers to one that is all synth and electronica. Carpenter's score has a modest jump from 2017. Carpenter collaborated with sound designer Alan Howarth to set up the range of electronic instruments and tools. The electronic equipment had to be manually synchronized with the picture audio.
4815162342
#76 Ben-Hur (1959) Composed By Miklós Rózsa 271 Points Top 10 Placements: 1 Sword and Sandal epics have always featured on the Top 100, with Ben-Hur being no exception. At the time of release, Rózsa had composed over two-and-a-half hours of music, making it the longest film score composed at the time, and for many decades afterwards. It was also one of the first film scores to be released in its own album. The countdown will continue tomorrow evening 7
