Wreck-It Ralph in 3D

7:00PM Sunday, November 4th

AMC Boston Common 19 & Lie-MAX

Theater Capacity: 325 (50%+ full, some kids but mostly college-aged adults)

Ticket Price: $16.00

Concessions: Dibs Crunch, $0 (Stubs points)

TRAILERS:

Dino Time 3D - "That is not a Disney movie." That's for sure. Looks mediocre, got some talking.

Escape From Planet Earth - looks meh, got a weak reaction

Despicable Me 2 - THE MINIONS ARE BACK!!! I loved this second teaser, looks amazing. Got a great reaction, too!

Smurfs 2 - very stupid teaser, the girls behind me said, "Oh this looks dumb already!"

Oz - same trailer, some talking from crowd (a few people thought this was a Wicked adaptation)

The Croods - this Dreamworks movie looks unbelievably stunning in 3D; based on the image quality alone, I plan to see this in theaters. Everyone in the theater was saying the same thing: this is something we want to watch. Best reaction.

Monsters, Inc. 3D - some laughs out loud, no other reaction.

PAPER MAN:

Like any Pixar film playing in theaters, Disney decided to play an animated short film before Wreck-It Ralph called Paper Man about a man who falls in love with a woman on an elevated train platform. Aside from the woman's red lipstick, the whole short is black and white, and it's essentially little a silent film. The short was very sweet and garnered a lot of laughs and good vibes from the audience. When the credits started playing after it, the whole audience applauded Paper Man. The last time I remember an ovation for an animated short at the movie theater was Pixar's Partly Cloudy (the stork one about where babies come from)--kudos to Disney Animation for another short film success.

THE FILM:

It's getting late and I'm tired (and a little drunk, but anyway) so this'll be relatively brief... Wreck-It Ralph was excellent. It had the geeky allure of Scott Pilgrim, the screenplay parallels of the Toy Story films, the pop culture genre ensemble explosion of awesomeness like Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, the adorable/annoying little girls you fall in love with like in Despicable Me, the grid-like apocalyptic dystopia of Tron Legacy, the cleverly innovative means of connecting worlds like Monsters, Inc., the very G-rated sugar-loaded version of pod-racing a la Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, and the positive message that the best person in the world you could be is yourself (much like any hero's journey type films). The voice cast was great, the 3D works (but I'm sure 2D is just as fine), the story was flawless, and the scarcity of problems I have with this film surprises me. Even better: the audience loved this movie! Perfect audience experience, everyone laughed throughout and it was genuinely a great time at the theater. I'm very happy to recommend Wreck-It Ralph to people of all ages and genders. It's a great four-quadrant movie.

Experience - 30/30

Story/Writing - 20/20

Voice Acting - 13/15 (*Jack MacBreyer sounds too much like Jack MacBreyer; I could only picture Kenneth whenever his character spoke his lines)

Tech Specs (Cinematography, Editing, Effects) - 15/15

Directing - 10/10

Music - 9/10

Bonuses: Awards Caliber +3 (original screenplay, best animated picture, best animated short)

THE VERDICT: 100/100, A

Wreck-It Ralph

Disney El Capitan Theater

Friday - 7:00PM 75% Full

There was a song and dance show prior to the movie featuring Disney characters and Vanellope and Ralph, pretty interactive and helped the kids in the audience get warmed up for the movie itself.

Trailers:

Oz The Great and Powerful - No reaction at all

The Lone Ranger - Some parents seemed shocked that the trailer showed people getting shot and killed and scenes of women in what looked like a brothel. I know Disney produced this movie, but showing the trailer in front of Wreck-It Ralph was probably not the best idea.

Monsters Inc. 3D - Some laughs

"Paperman" short review:

This was amazing. The entire audience reacted to everything on screen. The moment when the hero throws the paper with the lipstick mark played with expectations very well. The ending got applause from the kids in the audience as well. One of the better shorts i have seen, the lack of dialogue brings comparisons to the beginning of "UP". Not as good as that, but pretty good nonetheless.

Review:

This was a really well made movie. The story is very predictable though and you can spot the ending chekov's gun the moment it is introduced. However the story does manage to hit some emotional high notes which I really didn't expect outside of a Pixar movie. The entire audience went silent when Ralph does what the king asks him to do. I heard a few kids talk to their parents about it later (there was a special "The art of Wreck-it Ralph" exhibit tour post the movie) and some of them were saying "If the movie ended there it would have been the worst movie ever". The voice acting is competent, John C. Reilly does well, Sarah Silverman is annoying as hell but i guess that is what the character is meant to be. Jack McBrayer and Jane Lynch haven't even attempted to hide their voices or try something different, i kept hearing Kenneth the page and Sue Sylvester each time they spoke.

I was disappointed that Ralph only visits 2 other games during his "going Turbo" time. I thought we would have seen more game hopping - but that is an expectation based disappointment. The only other disappointment was that in the climactic scene when Ralph is headed to

smash the Mentos mountaintop

i would have liked him to do so in his trademark pose instead of the psuedo-Superman like pose, again an expectation based disappointment more than anything.

Overall, the movie was really good and very entertaining for its runtime. Definitely recommended. Would give it 4/5.

Postscript:

Post the movie there was a tour of the "Art of Wreck-it Ralph" exhibit. They showed the original designs for Ralph and the "Fix it Felix Jr." game along with models for other characters and games and the central attraction being the statues of all the characters that everyone wanted to take pictures with. There were also real arcade games to play which made it fun.

I went to see it in Lie-MAX yesterday at noon, first showing of the day. It was 25% full in a 654-seat auditorium, male-leaning audience (no surprise there). I decided not to write a crowd report for this showing because the atmosphere was less than ideal and I'll be seeing Skyfall in a proper IMAX theater tomorrow afternoon.

Better atmosphere + bigger crowd = better experience = higher VERDICT

Skyfall2:40PMOn the biggest screen-about 90% full! This thing was PACKED! Quite a few older people (Well the franchise is 50 years old so yeah)Trailers:Zero Dark Thrity: No reaction. Looks decent.Django (New trailer): Quite a bit of laughs.Last Stand (New trailer): TONS of laughs.Bitter Pill: Never even heard of this till today. Looks...intresting. Some laughs at the rather cheesy tagline.Good Day to Die Hard: Some laughs and people really wanted to see this.Identify Theft: I noticed they changed the Spring 2013 on this. Laughs. Looks okay.Movie: Probably the best Bond. M's character was in it more then ever (Though I think it might be because Dench is getting ready to retire-feel sorry for her right now). The Bond girl was barley in it. Bardem was great. The part by Albert Finney was great. Audience really loved it.A

Does anyone have any clue what "Bless Me Ultima" is? I saw it listed as a film playing at the theater...never heard of it till today.

According to IMDB, "A drama set in New Mexico during WWII, centered on the relationship between a young man and an elderly medicine woman who helps him contend with the battle between good and evil that rages in his village." Edited by blenderbus

Skyfall

November 10, 7:00 PM, I don't even know% full (There were three full rows available up front, but everything else was completely full. My most full crowd since posting here.)

Portage 16 IMAX, Portage, IN

Trailers

Identity Thief - No one was really paying attention, some laughs.

Zero Dark Thirty - Silent, except for heckling at the beginning.

The Last Stand - Some laughs.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - Lots of shushings; much better response here than at WIR.

Great movie, and I'm pretty sure the crowd loved it, although they were oddly quiet. Some applause at the end; there would've probably been more if it wasn't for the gunbarrel sequence being awkwardly at the end. Laughs throughout, and besides the heckling at the ZDT trailer, it was a nice crowd.

I need to do this more often cause I'm behind...

Wreck-It Ralph (2D)

November 3rd, 2012

5-Screen Cinema (normally not very busy)

7:30pm/380ish seats

75% full. Majority teens/young adults. But lots of families too.

Only trailers were The Croods and Rise of the Guardians. Neither got any reactions. Paperman got quite the positive reaction though. As for the actual movie, everyone loved it!

________________________________________________

Skyfall

7:00pm; 382 seats sold out.

November 10th, 2012

8-Screen Cinema (normally pretty busy, thanks to location)

Trailers:

Gangster Squad: General chatter/interest

The Great Gatsby: Nothing

Identity Thief: Lots of laughter.

Jurassic Park 3D (despite trailer being 2D): Lots of "ooh great movie" and "love that movie" talk.

Film: Absolutely loved it. I dunno if it tops Casino Royale as my favorite Bond film yet, but it definitely might. My friends loved it, the audience loved it. Seriously, Sam Mendes deserves something for this film. Javier Bardem was amazing as always, and though some may disagree; Daniel Craig is the definitive James Bond in my opinion. Word of mouth will be amazing for this, and will play well through the holidays.
