Highest grossing movies of all-time in the European Union (+UK)

Recommended Posts

I decided to create a thread dedicated to the European box office because I find it very interesting, and unfortunately the old thread about a similar topic is completely abandoned (but also quite different from what I had in mind)

The main topic of this thread will be to have a list of the highest grossing movies ever by adding up the gross of the 27 countries that make up the European Union, plus the former member UK and also the members of the European Economic Area (EEA) Norway, Iceland and Switzerland, which could basically be defined "half members" of the EU. In this way the only relevant European markets left out will be Russia, Ukraine and Turkey

The countries considered have a total of 530 million inhabitants and a number of tickets sold of over one billion a year, equal to USA+Canada (and also China), but with a slightly lower box office given the lower average cost of tickets especially due to Central/Eastern Europe

Although 19 out of 31 countries use the Euro, the ranking is in dollars for obvious reasons of convenience and functionality, and to have also a better comparison with the North American and woldwide total

Then there would be a dozen films between 300 and 350 million, in the next few days I will see whether to add them to have a top 20/25 instead of having only 18 films

For No Way Home I'll wait to have the sixth weekend data for most of the countries, which should arrive tomorrow at this time or a bit later (or at least I hope)

Yeah while "doing the math" I was almost worried that it would have passed it, in the end it came really close 😅

Thank you very much for your work, but since you make some comments about exchange rates for Avatar and IA4 (DH2 was really benefited too), I miss similar comments for other films with the opposite problem, like those released in 2001-2002. Both HP1 (I guess you are looking for data for it since it was a bigger monster than many films in the list and I know there are not many data about it in BOM) and FOTR were really damaged because extremely bad exchange rates (dollar bigger than euro during 2001-2002), being both films the most attended in many European countries among those franchises.

It is hard to compare films since admissions data are not available for many countries. Unadjusted dollar by inflation or ERs is ok, but generates this kind of problems. Anyway, and again, thanks for your initiative :)

Nice, thank you ! Didn't realize that our French film "The Intouchables" was so huge in all Europe

@MG10, I know that it will take you a lot of time but is it possible to make the same ranking but with admissions, because it will allow us to have a better idea of the performance of these huge films in European markets

Forgive me but I think I definitely wouldn't be able, but between InsideKino and Lumiere (who already adds up the results for the EU) someone else could succeed

If I am not wrong @charlie Jatinder has a thread about WW admissions for the biggest films. I guess he has those data.

And there are some links for this kind of info in this old thread: Adjusting Exchange Rates... We abandoned it a long time ago but the sources we posted there should have that info

@LPLC

Yesterday I forgot to mention it but The Intouchables was indeed really impressive, it grossed 350M of which only 3M in the UK where sadly it was completely ignored. This means that if we did a ranking without the UK it would probably even be in the top 10!

Yeah, my fellow brits really did ignore that wonderful film. Though our cap for a foreign language film is really low, I think Parasite is the highest at around $15m

I think measuring in Euro will be nicer. Since you have already compiled list in USD, it won't be that much trouble, just convert USD to EUR with that time exchange rate

This is a good idea, but you should do separate counts for the UK and their pounds, plus all other countries with different currencies like Switzerland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Poland to name the most important. So let's say I leave this honor to you  ; )

Wonderful job 👍🏼, and yeah Lumiere unfortunately only has data from 1996 to 2019 (or 2020, I don't remember). And I recommend stopping at the 50th position because after that the list starts to get quite long and probably requires too much work

Ok, I will post more movies later. I have remembered The Da Vinci Code, Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis or The Sixth Sense as huge grossers in Europe.

In order to have the most info possible I will hide from the 51th spot
