94th Academy Awards Discussion Thread | WHAT JUST HAPPENED

dumbfuck Academy wants more ratings but shafts the categories that the biggest BP nominee of the year was nominated for and will mostly win.

Dune isn't a Disney movie, so...

The Tonys show clips of the "lesser" winners during the main  telecast, "spoilers" get out and it's just not the same. An Oscar's an Oscar, but...

AMPAS seems desperate to be the People's Choice Awards or the MTV Movie Awards, true ratings winners these days... Maybe they can find old Blockbuster Awards footage on YouTube for show tips.

A lot of big names pushed back the last time the Oscars tried cutting categories from primetime (three years ago). The reactions tomorrow once the A-list has had time to formulate their thoughts are going to be interesting... It's just a litany of poor decisions about the telecast, at what point does the overall membership throw out the people in charge over there?

So this year ceremony is like 92nd Oscar all over again. First we have Oscar fan favourite category like a tone down version of best popular movie and now this. Just like how they first attempt before 92nd Oscar. I wonder what next?

For the 91st Oscars, they also tried 90 second Best Original Song performances (even when Shallow was in the mix) and not having the prior year's acting winners as presenters because they weren't "famous" enough. Everyone balked and the clownery was averted.

Last year, the Best Song performances were taped and on the pre-show. Maybe since it's Billie Eilish and Beyonce and an Encanto song, they might leave that category alone. With the "performers don't have to be vaxxed" idea they floated, there's speculation that's about getting Van Morrison to show up.

Oh ya all those attempts was made during 91st oscar. But turns out despite nothing changed in the end , that was one of the more enjoyable ceremony in recent memory. I actually quite enjoy 89th and 86th(when Ellen hosted) in particular.

Has for the hope that streaming would be a game changer:

https://www.sportsmediawatch.com/super-bowl-ratings-historical-viewership-chart-cbs-nbc-fox-abc/

The superbowl had 6 millions device streaming (with an estimated 11.2 million people watching them) versus an estimated 99.2 millions TV viewer (which will maybe end up again much larger like last year)

https://www.sportspromedia.com/news/super-bowl-tv-ratings-audience-viewership-nielsen-fox/

Those tv numbers are bigger than say all the superbowl between before 2010.

Sport fans are probably more TV ready with either a good antenna or cable and the type of streaming service that would have the superbowl on it is not Disney+ popular among people without working regular NBC signal working, but how large and what "quality" (actually watching the ads/show versus background noise while using many other device) would be added ? How much of an excuse it is for something that is on TV and a event and not cable.

Gee, who could've seen this coming?

A decision not to present eight Oscar categories live during the March 27 broadcast of the 93rd Academy Awards was met with a storm of criticism and was described as “insulting” by numerous Academy members who spoke with The Hollywood Reporter following the announcement.

The reaction to the Oscars’ new format was met with strong reactions from the industry. Though some crafts guilds were diplomatic, their public statements hinted at bruised feelings. However, multiple sources tell Variety that there are currently discussions among members of the music branch to ask the score nominees to boycott, appealing to the nominees for best original score — Nicholas Britell (“Don’t Look Up”), Germaine Franco (“Encanto”), Jonny Greenwood (“The Power of the Dog”), Alberto Iglesias (“Parallel Mothers”) and Hans Zimmer (“Dune”) — to not attend the ceremony in protest. There are also calls for the directors and other branches to defend the artisans in all of these categories.

The Hollywood Reporter has learned that in Friday’s Zoom meeting, the Academy — which was represented in the meeting by CEO Dawn Hudson, president David Rubin and vp and awards chair Jennifer Todd — told participants that it plans to have everyone seated by 4pm on the day of the Oscars for this presentation, in advance of the 5pm show time, with the pre-recorded red carpet available for broadcast during that window. (The Academy intends to reveal winners to the public via social media during this time.)

“Contentious” Oscars Meeting Held Over Live Telecast Decision – The Hollywood Reporter

So the red carpet isn't even gonna be live either? They are truly throwing everything at the wall to see what sticks. It seems they are dead set on these changes with no backpedaling this time around so might as well bring on the disaster since that's what they're clearly aiming for.

Just you think the Oscars cannot get any more clueless, they find a way.

I will be surprised if Milla Jovovich does not get a spot, since she sort of become the main spokesperson for the Ukranian American Community over the invasion.

After SAG, I think all of Will Smith, Ariana DeBose, and Troy Kotsur are repeating. Maybe Kodi can win if he gets BAFTA and POTD is BP, but CODA is beloved and Kotsur has a rooting factor.

Actress is a toss-up but Chastain might win by process of elimination. Kidman really should have gotten SAG. Stewart missed SAG and BAFTA and her film was snubbed everywhere. Cruz is a gutsy prediction since she's an international film without major momentum outside of critics. Leaves Chastain and Colman
