No matter how much of the new cast it pushed, it was still advertised as a direct sequel to a series that a very small amount of today's youth have seen. I agree that the only way to successfully revive a franchise today is to quasi-reboot it. Star Trek is a shining example of a movie that appealed to fans new and old.
