miketheavenger
I think this weekend will be a lot slower that the last few. This weekend will have very nice spring weather across the country, so people will likely want to do activities outside.

The only opener doing anything resembling business was "Still Alice" on its few screens, no doubt helped by the Oscar win but also good reviews. "Focus" is disappointing and "Chappie" a real flop. "La famille Bélier" was way behind expectations, too. And the drops - ugh, no, let's have a look at next weekend instead: "Kingsman: The Secret Service" is my personal favourite among the openers, sadly buzz is still missing - let's see, an action comedy might be just the thing against boring weekends! "Cinderella" - don't really know if it will connect, the kids market is a bit dry atm. "The Wedding Ringer" - another tired comedy ... Since nothing opens really wide, 50SoG might stay on top next weekend too! Of course I hope that Kingsman can do better.
el sid
True. The buzz for Kingsman could be bigger. It's the same at my cinema. It is doing better than Focus and Chappie, but a bit more reservations would be nice. But it improves and perhaps with a 200k+ weekend and a very good WOM (which it has), it could still reach a million admissions. I think the Wedding Ringer will find some moderate audience. The Cinderella movie is (like Kingsman) a film where I think it will be a hit - but not especially on its first weekend, more in its longtime run. And by the way I said earlier, 1M admissions = $10M. But I made a double mistake and only because of that I was right again. First I forgot to transfer Euros into US$ and second I did not look at the exchange rate. Of course, a year or two earlier, 1M admissions would have translated into $13-14M. But the exchange rate is so terrible at the moment (I read it here but did not realize how terrible it is), that all movies need much more admissions at the moment.
juni78ukr
What about Leviathan? How wide it will be?
IndustriousAngel
What about Leviathan? How wide it will be? about as wide as Keira Knightleys waist, max. Seriously, this is restricted to arthouses, and not that many on opening weekend, maybe 50 or 60 would be my guess. Of course, with arthouse films, it's not about the opening weekend, but 100k total I'd consider a success.
IndustriousAngel
if I take just my cinema, Kingsman will rather disappoint this weekend ... Cinderella otoh is doing ok - not really big business but at least double that of Kingsman.

el sid
At my cinema Cinderella and Kingsman are pretty head to head (perhaps Cinderella is a little bit in front here too). The reservations for both for tomorrow are around 150% of what Focus and Chappie had last week. The admission numbers for today are like that (these are of course not exact numbers but most of the time they are surprisingly close). I don't know exactly how to value them, I can only try. Newcomers: Kingsman: 22.600 - not too bad but could be better, for comparison Focus had 17k and Chappie 12k Opening Day, but both had not that WOM, not by far Cinderella 11.500 (only evening) - quite ok I think Wedding Ringer: 2730 - clearly not ok Holdovers: 50 Shades: 21.030 Traumfrauen: 14.503 AS: 12.209 Focus: 8.147 Chappie: 3.404 Still Alice: 3.260 Edited March 12, 2015 by el sid
IndustriousAngel
2015 in Austria: Jan was only so-so (but at least about 20% up from 2014), but we had the best Feb of the last 5 years - mostly thanks to 50SoG. March is not looking so good atm but March 2014 was terrible too so we should see a healthy overall increase 1st quarter. In Germany, thanks to a strong domestic lineup, numbers look even better!

Again, it's a holdover weekend: 50SoG passed 4mil total (better than every Twilight movie), and "Frau Müller muss weg" passed 1mil total. Some movies managed an increase, among them the new Astérix which seems to get a little WOM after the poor start (saw it yesterday, it's a really nice one, one of the best Astérix adaptions ever). "Honig im Kopf" fell below 100k admissions in week 12 but is still remarkably strong, 7mil total are still possible! Next weekend: "Shaun the Sheep" is very successful as a TV show and should do fairly well in theaters, too. It might become nr.1 for the weekend, depending on Cinderella's hold and the other wide opener, "Insurgent"- 300k are possible for both. Shaun should see much better holds than Insurgent, though. Also opening: "The Boy Next Door" - ugh. And Austrian dark crime comedy "Das ewige Leben" gets its Germany release after two very successful weeks in Austria, but will be restricted to mostly Bavaria due to language problems farther north.
IndustriousAngel
No trend yet but first numbers indicate Cinderella might stay on top ... openers not doing too well. Of course, with Shaun there's little rush factor, but the same went for Cinderella last week. edit: first trend is online: #1: Shaun - 300k admissions (contains a lot of previews) #2: Cinderella - 200k (-25%) #3: Insurgent - 200k (also some previews) that's ok for Shaun and so-so for Insurgent, couldn't expand as much from part 1 as hoped for.
