on a positive note, atm we have the UCI road cycling worls championship in town; while a lot of Innsbruckers are whining about closed roads, it's a really nice event; fans from all over the world, without any hooligans - everybody with a smile and supporting all athletes alike. The Incredibles 2 (released in 703 theaters, very good reviews, the first movie had 751k admissions OW and 3.5M total admissions): 45k/491k US$
Ballon (a German history drama/thriller, 428, good reviews): 12k – hope WOM will help in the following weeks
Offenes Geheimnis/Todos lo saben (114, mixed reviews between 4 and 8/10): 2k → 17.5k OW

The mentioned holdovers were pretty successful:

Klassentreffen 1.0: 17k (actuals last Thursday 15k)
The Nun: 7.5k (11k)
Book Club: 6k (7.5k)

Unfortunately, it won't quite pass Frozen. I really wonder btw, if Incredibles 2 couldn't beat Frozen WW, which Animation will?

Toy Story 4 I think will decrease from the third because no one was asking for it. Frozen 2 will likely also make less due to the first being such a phenomenon. I guess ultimately it's gonna be another film that no one is gonna see coming like it was the case with Frozen.

With the help of Inflation and OS expansion/China becoming larger and larger, it will happen eventually. But Frozen was kind of a perfect storm, especially in Japan. I dont see a (non-Anime) animated film becoming THAT huge in Japan soon.

Apropos: Venom starts in Germany tomorrow evening (not midnight) due to the Tag der Deutschen Einheit on Wednesday so we should get first reactions and maybe also some reviews soon.
Even today it's mostly sunny where I live, the only day of the week which was predicted to become bad, but as mentioned above this week is still cinema-friendly because of the legal holiday on Wednesday and school holidays in several states. Plus it has become really cold.

Openers on the lower end of expectations and hard drops, frankly I'm rather tired of commenting this year's shitty numbers. Looking for a silver lining, Sauerkrautkoma and The Nun are definitely overperforming but what we really need are some blockbusters.

Next weekend: Venom will be the biggest opener and should be #2 behind the Incredibles. A total around 750k would be the goal for this release I guess though you never know with the Marvel characters, it might become a (very welcome) surprise and top a million!

Venom opened higher than I expected and is leading the weekend - first estimates from insidekino.de :

#1: Venom - 450k (incl. Wed)

#2: Incredibles2 - 250k (harsh drop, doesn't look good)

#3: A Star is Born - 150k (better than expected, too)

#4: Klassentreffen - 110k

#5: Ballon - 90k

 

Overall a good weekend withg the exception of steep drops for family fare. Venom will reach 1mil total without problem with this kind of opening!

I‘m not surprised by the I2 drop, weather is predicted to be fabulous today and on Saturday. Maybe Sunday can turn some things around for the family films.
