Turning Red definitely hurt by not being theatrical. Just didn't have the same conversation around it and the songs didn't become hits like Encanto either.

Honestly the way the whole thing revolved around reinforcing "animated movies are real movies too" gave off the sense they decided to spend the opening of the show addressing all the controversies they faced at the previous ceremony.

Turning Red was pretty average by Pixar standards. This was the right choice.
