It still has a few IMAX showings but it seems to have lost most of them and all dolby as well.

Unfortunately that also means the drop will be even worse than admits suggest because ATP will fall off a cliff too...

Omg, the second weekend is now looking like 50% drop from OW. Is WOM bad or something? Most comments I saw so far have been overwhelmingly positive. Really didn't expect the second weekend hold to be this bad in Japan, a market that know how to accommodate different movies at once.

I know it might be premature but I really do think Elemental will do better than the expectation of 1.2 billion yen total. I think there is a visible audience for the movie in Japan and the marketing seems to be landing. Might be wrong though.

Weekend has been going very steady. Will hopefully their day break screenings are going well! Now, with the announcement of Last Screening Date, we will obviously see good sizable increase and ofc it's Summer Vacation and they got Obon Festival too!

Just like Toei's "One Piece: Film Red" erased Ghibil's "Howl's Moving Castle" I expect SLAM DUNK to do the same with Ponyo though might not be enough

I like anime shows, but none of them have anything on the ghibli classics and it’s kinda sad to see them all getting erased in records by them

those HDYL drops make me sad

Yeah, now I have the doubt if the movie will pass TWR. This is strange after all the good words about the movie, except some said the movie can cause some confusion. Now I have to weigh in the negative impact of zero marketing. Those Miyazaki's fans will have far higher awareness about the movie before hand and therefore OW was not affected. However, as the run progress, the lack of marketing limit the transmission of awareness to wider audience and that start to affect the run.

forget TWR, the way things are going I don't think it's going to cross or even come close to 10b without some quick course correction

50% drops on SUMMER BREAK WEEKDAYS!!! in japan is BAD. and I don't mean bad by Miyazaki standards, I mean bad in general. this needs to stabilise asap

Does anyone know if Miyazaki's Nausicaä and Castle in the Sky were box office hits in their original runs? Or did they only make a profit after TV airings/merch/home video like Totoro?

Wikipedia has the numbers but I don't know what the benchmark for success is back in their time and Wikipedia itself is unreliable anyway, it says Kiki's Delivery Service was the highest grosser of 1989 in Japan but other articles say it was #3

Aside from that I'm now well read with Miyazaki's box office journey: Cagliostro and Totoro flopped in their original runs, then it's an upward trajectory starting from Kiki up to Spirited then it's downhill again.

PS - So it seems Suzuki truly isn't vindicated with his no spoilers no trailers campaign. After the rush from hardcore fans, looks like the GA really isn't aware that this movie even exists and since WOM is mixed, it will stay that way. If anything, maybe not knowing anything about the movie exacerbated the confusion and frustration from the incoherent and convoluted story.

Castle In The Sky

Rentals - ¥583M / Box Office - ¥1.16B

Nationwide Mobilization - 774,271 admits

Budget (Raw) - ¥500M / incl. Ads &Marketing - ¥800M

I don't really consider it hit but somehow not at lose either because later OS release really proved to be an successful release - even before that it has got strong TV ratings (12.2% 1st Broadcast 1988, 22.6% 2nd Broadcast 1989...) VHS &DVD sales were good too -

Spoiler
