I must say that after seeing the excellent results of the anime films of the last few years (mainly Kimetsu no Yaiba and Jujutsu Kaisen, but also the usual Detective Conan, Evangelion and Doraemon) I checked again how much Dragon Ball: Broly has earned, and as I remembered it was only ¥4 billion

But how is it possible that the most important and promoted film of one of the most famous and appreciated series of all time loses the comparison so clearly?

Demon Slayer is pretty much the most popular anime of all time by a mile in Japan at this point, so all comparisons are pretty much off in that case. JJK isn't up there, but it's still tremendously popular. In any circumstance I would say a DB movie would lose this comparison regardless nowadays, it just isn't as popular in 2022 (in Japan).

Conan is possibly the long running anime series to have aged the best, even getting more popular in recent years. Evangelion is a different kind of appeal, with an extremely loyal fanbase (plus inflated ticket price and strong push by studio, even featuring what was pratically a re-rerelease towards the end of its run with new scenes which pushed it over the edge for 10B, a mark that it was clearly going to miss otherwise). Doraemon nowadays, doesn't really seem much different from DB in terms of numbers to me, minus Stand By Me which is a very different deal.

But a big factor to me is simply that DB movies hardly feel like an event, even when they're canon. It's a story that has been complete for decades and is only being milked at this point, only playing for its own fanbase nowadays. It's not going to appeal to casuals outside of the brand fans at all. A movie like JJK while still frontloaded to a degree is not the same kind of movie that just dies off immediately after fanboys rush is over like a Broly or your typical franchise film.

Highkey expecting Super Hero to do worse than Broly as well, as the movie's pv really have just looked all around underwhelming. The CGI isn't terrible, but compared to the animation spectacle of Broly it's just not up to par.

Demon Slayer=MCU(Most popular for now

Dargon Ball=Superman (In term of global culture impact is the biggest ,It's super popular in last century but lost the fanbase of nowadays new kid)

JJK=Fast*Furious(It's super popular but not the most popular)

Doramon=SpangeBob (The TV series is super popular but the popularity can't transform to Box office)

Canon=James Bond 007 (It's already popular for a real long time and still popular nowadays )

Thanks for the answer, and yeah for "Super Hero" I'm expecting ¥2B to be generous

It's an estimate like mine. Somewhere between $1M-$1.1M. You will know Studio (est.) numbers by Mon (02:00 JST), Est. in yen by Tuesday (16:00 JST) &actuals by Tuesday (24:00 JST) /Wednesday (09:00 JST)

So quite some time for the actuals. Well... Let's hope for the better and great legs.
