chasmmi
I can go to the cinema here for about 8000 won ($8.5?) and for about 11-12k for 3D ($12-13). Koreans do love the cinema and it helps to have a local industry they are immensly proud of and a few actors and (especially) directors of world renown. With regards to piracy, Hollywood combats this by releasing the biggest, most likely to be big blockbusters in Korea before almost anywhere else (or at worst in line with the first wave of releases). To see this effect compare the performances of IM3 and WWZ compared to DM2 and such although this is not always the main factor. Piracy in Korea kills video sales not cinema. Whereas a Hollywood film can make up to 50% or more of its gross from DVD sales etc, in Korea it is closer to 20%. Cable networks here have insane VOD services to try and combat this (WWZ is already available as is Jobs and probably more.) I saw Expendables 2 last year about 3 weeks after it left cinemas. However you spin things Korean cinema and cinema-going is insanely hot right now, the problem is if a film doesn't succeed on its cinematic release, it will not ever rebound through home video sales like US films can. The only exception to this will be if a film gets cult status internationally (I think for example that Oldboy may well have sold more DVDs in the UK than in Korea but don't quote me on that it could be total rubbish staticising).
lab276
Yeah, the South Korean box office this year has just exploded, average attendance could go as high as 4.4 per person, last year it was 3.9. Surely there's no way that's gonna be kept up.

chasmmi
What is the biggest Hollywood horror film in Korea?depending on how you categorize a horror I would guess maybe either prometheus, resident evil afterlife or I am legend. The latter made 17 million dollars which would be around the 3 million admission Mark I think
