Informative article about the South Korean box office from deadline

KOREA

Asia Pacific is “still the most dynamic and rapidly expanding region in the world,” says an exec. And it’s not unheard of for studios to make up to two-thirds of their Asian business outside China. A lot of that can be attributed to Korea. Box office in the market through mid-December was up $107M, or 8%, over 2013 on 62 fewer titles, per Rentrak.

The local film industry is strong and has often outrun Hollywood across the Top 10 films, but this year market share was more even which could be a sign of increased potential going forward. Over the first six months of the year, local titles had just 43% of the market. But by the end of the year, there were six Korean movies in the Top 10, led by Roaring Currents — the all-time biggest film at about $132M.

Moviegoers respond to action, sci-fi, fantasy and spectacle. But they also have a soft side – Richard Curtis’ romantic comedy About Time last year was a huge hit here, and this year audiences connected with the sentimental aspects of Edge Of Tomorrow and Interstellar. The latter is the No. 3 film of the year with over $72M. Local documentary, My Love, Don’t Cross That River, about an aged couple’s lifelong romance, recently became the top Korean indie ever with $18.5M.

It’s often referred to as a fast-burn market, especially if a movie doesn’t open strongly. There is crossover between the major exhibitors and distributors and this can result in a quick drop in screen count. But when a movie is hot, it can play for several weeks, ie InterstellarFrozen ($77M) and The Grand Budapest Hotel($5.6M).

The country has also taken on importance in terms of release dates. Studios know to steer clear of certain local films while pumping in blockbuster titles ahead of other markets as Paramount did with Noah and Fox did with Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes and Exodus: Gods And Kings. The next big local title coming up that many are steering clear of is Gangnam 1970 on January 22. The Ha Yoo directed period noir thriller is set in the titular Seoul neighborhood at the height of political corruption and sees a pair of childhood friends divided when one goes straight and the other joins a powerful criminal organization. The only Hollywood film releasing the same day is Disney’s family pic Big Hero 6.

The Hobbit: The battle of the five armies weekly run (admissions)

Week1: 1,317,911

Week2: 1,018,176 (-22.7%)

Week3:    382,483 (-62.4%)

Massive drop in week 3. Luckily Five armies has only 98,128 admissions to run down to overcome An unexpected Journey. In gross the difference is around half a million dollars.

Ode to my Father weekly run (admissions)

Week1: 1,555,073 (33,048 in previews)

Week2: 2,726,528 (+75.3%)

Week3: 3,471,464 (+27.3%)

If Ode to my father can stay close to the admission number of its opening week in week 4 then it will be at around 9M admissions by the end of the upcoming week. That would lock 10M admissions for sure.

This weeks new releases

  • Chef (01/07)
  • Unbroken (01/07)
  • Predestination(01/07)
  • Casa Amor; Exclusive for ladies (01/07)
  • Paddington (01/08)

I have my happy face on having found out that John wick is coming out the day before Big Hero 6!

January 21st-22nd is gonna be an awesome time :)

The only question is how many of Chef, Unbroken, Paddington, American Sniper and NATM3 to I watch between now and the 21st?

It's a pretty epic looking January for Hollywood films (which will mostly all get sadly squashed by the local films [nothing at all against the local fair of course just down that whichever side wins some probably underserving films are likely to be swallowed])

I'm definitely seeing chef, paddington and big hero 6 this month. Undecided on unbroken.

Very very poor release date for John wick. It might get some more recognition since Keeanu Reeves is set to visit South Korea on a promotion tour on the 8th. Unfortunately though it's opening on the same day as the hugely anticipated Gangnam blues. Given the similar theme and age ratings of the two films, the audience demography looks to overlap a lot and John Wick could easily get buried.

I like this post for the truth and not the info that John wick is dying a death as I honestly think it looks great.

Will be interesting to see if the food in chef looks as good as that Korean Iron Chef style film (forget the name) of about 10 years ago.

Really bad drop for five armies against weak releases. Late legs have been really terrible.

John Wick seems to be solid critically and it's a low budget ($20M) film so even $2-3 million gross total would be decent I think.

I think you mean Le Grand Chef (식객)? It's the only cooking film that comes immediately to mind.

I think it's safe to say now that Ode to my father is locked to beat 10 million admissions. This will make it the fourth film released in 2014 to reach the milestone which is a ridiculous amount. It used to be that a film reaching 10M admissions was a really big deal but nowadays the novelty factor and significance is starting to diminish somewhat with at least one film from summer and one from winter always being expected to reach it. Maybe roaring currents should be the new standard of what constitutes a "mega-hit film" in South Korea

It is amazing how Korean people love to go to cinemas. In Spain, with a similar population, there is just 1 film over 10 million admissions (Titanic). Good for you :)

10m admissions in SK is HUGE!!! It's 20% of the population. Imagine 20% of the population go to the movies DOM... that's 70m admissions ($8 is the average ticket there), so it means $560m!!!!
