fmpro
300m OS should be locked! Please explain the breakdown for that
LexJoker
I think it is based on expectations from China and Japan, which I doubt will take the OS total to $300M.
Tower
It would one of those MOS or STID type of runs in China.
A Marvel Fanboy
dont bet on Japan for a superhero film like this. And this wont do MoS number in China. Maybe try half.
zackzack
TW can get $10M from Japan and $30M from China $400M WW is secure. Very good for such a mediocre movie.
Goffe
only 10m from Japan, are you sure?
Sam
I'd say 15M in Japan (like MOS) is a better bet, maybe it can push for 20M considering the Japanese setting and Hugh Jackman is a bigger star than the leads in MOS.
fmpro
So Wolverine will need around 45 mill in china to break 300 mill OS..That seems tough.. 25-30 mill seems more likely there..
fmpro
Anyone have a total for this? BOM seems to have a lower number than it should be
fmpro
Total Lifetime GrossesDomestic: $130,226,000 35.5%+ Foreign: $236,367,000 64.5%= Worldwide: $366,593,
A Marvel Fanboy
Opened 2.4m in Japan ... Told you not bet on too much ...
Sam
It could still get to 400M WW with the China release.Probably around 10M-11M total in Japan.
Goffe
Japanese really don't like superheros huh
A Marvel Fanboy
Their major audience now are old people and females, which trend to dislike superhero movies and (sci-fi) action flicks that Hollywood tentpoles have become. Also part of reason why Hollywood productions always tank in Japan in recent two years compared with years ago. Goffe
I thought being set in Japan and more self-contained than others supehero movies would help, apparently I was wrong Edited September 15, 2013 by Goffe
A Marvel Fanboy
Pacific Rim should have given lessons. And people who still think 47 Ronin and Godzilla (2014) do blockbuster numbers in Japan will be wrong, again.
Sam
It'll be interesting to see how Spidey will fare next year. I know that Spidey is popular in Japan and all, but I think with the current state of most Hollywood movies over there, especially superheroes movies, TASM2 will decrease from the first, probably to around IM3's number. John Marston
Wolverine portrays Japanese people in offensive and stereotypical ways so it is no surprise
zackzack
Is this still opening in Japan? ^^ You are right that Hollywood has an outdated view of East Asia. The superhero genre is for younger demographics but the same audience doesn't see samurais as heroes/anti-heroes or even villains, nor do they have affinity for such old world ethics. The reason for the decline in US movies in Japan. Young students who are previously known for being passive are now brave enough to take it to the street and challenge the establishment. The last great year for Hollywood in Japan is 2011 when there are POTTER finale, Mi4: Dubai, Pirates 4, and TF3 did very good business ($50M+) They have their own costumed superheroes:
