MovieMan89
2008 tells a different story. Weekend of the Opening Ceremony '08. http://boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/?yr=2008&wknd=32&p=.htm Not exactly a bustling weekend at the box office as you can see, and that was before the recession hit. druv10
Maybe we'll see bigger jumps than usual tomorrow.TDKR will need a jump in the high 30's or low 40's to make up for the disastrous increase on Friday. Mango
Geez possibly as low as $16 million? That's fucking crazy. Next thing we know just making it to $400 million is going to end up being a godsend. Edited July 28, 2012 by Dekunova

Pineapple Express is going to make double what The Watch made and it opened on Wednesday. Sisterhood is weaker then Step Up 4 but Step Up is not blowing it out of the water. And look at all the great holds by holdovers and look at the crap we have from Nikke. 2012 sucks.

MovieMan89
TDK dropped only 38.8% and all round the holds were pretty good.Well TDK wasn't in its 2nd weekend. It had a lot less it could drop by default. The two openers did mediocre at best, Mummy dropped 60% and everything else was below $10m so it wasn't exactly hard to have 35%-40% drops for those movies. The drops for the movies below $10m this weekend aren't awful either. And again the economy and box office climate was far more stable back then. lab276
2012 sucks. It's mixed. The first quarter was fantastic and now it's just a bit shit. Maybe that'll mean it gets stronger through August up to December.

This is beyond depressing.
rickfox
So which figure is more believable? 20m or 16m Edited July 28, 2012 by rickfox
MovieMan89
Pineapple Express was not mediocre. 41M 5 day for a stoner comedy is not mediocre.Eh, didn't realize it was a 5 day opener. Fine, but the overall point is the weekend of the summer Olympics opening is never a huge box office weekend, and this weekend will probably outgross 2008's corresponding one (about 105m that weekend for the top 12 vs a likely 115-120m for the top 12 this weekend). The Olympics DID affect the BO. You can't have that many people watching the opening ceremony and then argue it didn't. Honestly why are some of you so intent on ONLY using the tragedy whenever TDKR disappoints? It's seriously getting disturbing.
