Not yet.... this weekend, if it gets 400M+ then it will be locked. Needs at least 350M.

Thanks, Fake.

Btw, what is the total cost of Mermaid (prod+marketing)?

Any idea about the local movie revenue sharing in China and mermaid's overseas prospects?

180M prod budget+ around 100M marketing

Local movie gets around 37% of total gross

Rumor says the distributors bought Mermaid for around 600M yuan, they will afford most of the marketing cost..And they need at least 1.8B to break even

Some updates  on the 2 new releases, the notable 2.

CTHD2 is having mixed WOM, people either love it or hate it. It is behaving like The Assassin(2015) and The Master(2015), both do not really have huge commercial value and have mixed WOM because of their slow and artistic approach in the filmography and plot, more focused on Critical Success than Commercial Success. Wu Xia films have really lost its appeal...

Naruto is plagued by the late release date and HD online version is already available, it is difficult for fans to watch it because when they are searching for trailers online, they find the full HD Movie.

CTHD2 will fall hard tommorrow due to Mixed WOM, probablly earning less than 50M Yuan.
Optimistic Total Gross: CTHD2  250M Yuan, and Naruto 100M Yuan.

Both have almost no impact on Mermaid, in terms of showtimes or gross, but will impact MK2 and Macau 3 to a certain extent. MK2 and Macau 3 will both surpass 1billion Yuan, and should hit 1.1B Yuan.

Next 2 big openers will be Ip Man 3 and Zootopia on March 4th, so 2 full weeks for on-going movies to grab cash.

Ip Man 3 might be negatively impacted by mixed WOM of CTHD2 because they both star Donnie Yen, but Ip Man 3's WOM overseas is extremely strong and has broken many records in Asia.

Zootopia will likely do well because of the Disney brand, and should have a high no of screen counts on March 4th itself due to Disney's power as a distributor, it will put a nail on the coffin for KFP3, but will audiences be tired of another Talking-Animal movie just a month away from KFP3?

What is the record for a martial arts action movie? I am unfamiliar with Chinese martial arts cinema grosses on the mainland. I am wondering what kind of projections are there for Ip Man 3 vs. the records for the genre?

IP Man did 13.8m and Ip Man 2 more than 30m.

I expect more than 100m for Ip Man 3

If we go by the current trend of Disney movies, it is unlikely to do well beyond the top tier cities. But I have to say Zoopotia's trailer is hiiilaaarrriiioussss!

Mermaid beating the alltime record in 12 days. It's of cause really crazy but what made it crazy is not just the film itself, but the market growth.

Look at it this way: Boosted by the montrous aniticipation and Christmas holidays, Star Wars 7 broke the DOM OW record by a mile, and had 5 godly weekdays and a godly 2nd wknd. It's like everything as boxoffice-wise reachable as possible happened on one film, and where did it stand on its 12th day? $600m. Still $150m behind the previous alltime record holder Avatar. And Avatar held that record for 7 years, and that means 7 years of tickets price inflation.

Now, not only Mermaid did it much faster, it broke the alltime record which was set just 7 months ago. I mean, this is one hell of a way to give you some idea how fast the market here is growing.

SW7 took Avatar down on its 20th day. It'll be really interesting to see how much ahead of the previous record Mermaid is gonna be on the same day.

Olive and Firedeep, can any movie rest of the year challenge Mermaid? What movies comprise your top 10 for the year?

Who knows, we all thought Mermaid would only make 1.2B or something, and see what it turns out.And there are many local movies can breakout, so hard to predict top 10.

BTW Good news, Mermaid stayed over 100M on Friday,

  That is in USD right.

Taking into account any potential effects of piracy, mixed WOM of CTHD2, competition from Zootopia on March 4th, and Gods of Egypt on March 11th, and BvS on March 25... I am thinking around 600M Yuan, hopefully it gets higher. Weak month for movies in March, no much holidays whatsoever, the drop in daily gross might be bigger than we thought.
