Thursday:

CZ12 opened to 43M $6.8M including 2.6M midnight takes, breaking Dec OD record, which was just set by LiT last Wednesday.

LiT stole 34M to make its cume gross to 492M.

As expected, The Guillotines bombed with less than 8M grab on OD.

Losing most of its screens, LiP took another 1.6M, cume now over 560M.

Overally, Mon-Thu box office soared to 280M. Full week will easily past 600M or even 700M, making it most busiest week ever both in $ and adms.

Weekend forecast:

CZ12

Fri 50M

Sat 75M

Sun 65M

So 233M $37M Thu-Sun opening. $100M total should happen.

LiT

Fri 45M

Sat 77M

Sun 67M

So 380M $60M 2nd week, a new record, beating TF3's 369M. Cume will be 681M $109M by Sunday, will outgross PS2 to become biggest local film on next Tuesday at the latest.

The Guillotines

Fri 11M

Sat 16M

Sun 13M

So 48M $7.7M Thu-Sun opening, on par with the Last Supper. 100M will be hard.

Edit:

I was being a little too optimistic about the weekend.

It looks like all films didnt increase as much as I predicted on Friday.

Early estimates and Sat/Sun projections as below:

Friday & Weekend forecast:

CZ12

Thu 43M

Fri 43M

Sat 64M

Sun 52M

So 202M $32M Thu-Sun opening. $80M should be locked.

LiT

Thu 34M

Fri 45M

Sat 70M

Sun 63M

So 361M $57.7M 2nd week. So TF3's 370M $57M 2nd week record will be safe after all ? We will see. Cume will be 662M $106M by Sunday, will outgross PS2 to become biggest local film on next Tuesday. If we exclude its Mon-Tue 102M gross, Wed-Sun will be 259M, staggering -14% drop from its record-breaking opening week. With Chirstmas coming next week (all movies see big boost at Christmas Eve and on Christmas day even though it is not official holiday in China. This year, CE is Monday, so small drop from Sunday can be expected; and Christmas Day (12.26) is also cheap Tuesday, we will see very strong cinema business next Mon-Tue. New Year holiday falls between Jan 1~ Jan 3, another golden period for LiT and possibly CZ12. Without new releases coming, it will be all about LiT and CZ12 till the NY holiday ends. Anyway, it is hard to imagine LiT wont beat TF3 and challenge $200M.

The Guillotines

Thu 8M

Fri 7M

Sat 12M

Sun 9M

So 36M $5.7M Thu-Sun opening, on par with the Last Supper. 100M wont happen.

Opened at 18:00pm on Friday, The Last Tycoon took about 5M through evening shows. Another flop is produced.

Overally, Mon-Fri box office soared to nearly 400M. Full week will end up even close to 680M, making it most busiest week ever both in $ and adms. Which will be like whopping 28% bigger than previous record Titanic 3D opening week (530M).

By this Sunday (12.23), overal Dec box office will already be nearly 1.7B yuan, beating previous monthly record 1.65B set in this April. With one more week to go, Dec total box office will be about 2.2B. Insane !

Yearly 2012 will also cross 16.5B yuan, +26% from 2011. Maybe even close to 17B if SARFT finds extra money from some unstatisticed platforms .....who knows.

A really bad idea for Huayi to make CZ12 in 3D, no need for an action movie at all. The cinema that I'm frequently going only releases it in 3D, and I think most theatres are like this.Huayi is too greedy. It's time to pay off.
