The original "Expendables" was a surprise success in China, grossing $32 million. However, producer Millennium was not able to secure one of the country's coveted quota slots for imported movies, which allow producers to share in box office revenue, but generally no more than 24% of a film's gross ticket sales. Instead, Millennium sold the first "Expendables" film outright to a local distributor for about $600,000.

This time, Lerner said, Millennium should take home about $10 million from China for "The Expendables 2," and he hopes the returns will be even better for a third "Expendables" film, which is now in the works.

insidekino get their numbers from entgroup, and entgroup are the worst at reporting Chinese box office. They always lowball everything.

I would say even without Jet Li, its numbers wont see much changes. With Jet Li, it just became easier for it to get a China release.

Taken 2 did about 27M yuan through Mon-Thu, total is about $6.8M.

I wonder how much TE2 benifited from being last out of the gate for the big 4. It definitely had a much smoother run than TASM and TDKR.

A smoother run, yes, but relatively. It still got hurt by the over-crowded schedule. It was in a market that got overexploitated by TDKR/TASM/PROM. What better for it was, no new release 10 days within its opening.

We cannot really say which of the four

benifited the most, since none benifited actually. But we can say which got least hurt: TE2. And TASM was hurt the most. TE2 < TDKR < PROM <TASM, in term of most hurt.

Friday update:

Early tracking suggets Bait 3D is breaking out from the NINE openers and it will beat Taken 2 through the weekend.

The Cold Light of Day and The Expatriate are both bombing.

Pathectic weekend overal. Will be the lowest grossed week of the year to date.

As soon as people see that Bait 3D is shit, it'll drop hard. But this is just the type of movie that Chinese would go and see and actually enjoy. So, I don't know.

That's pretty shocking. It bombed here, so I have no idea why its breaking out in any capacity, let alone in first place.
