Does nobody realize that, unless you've got a novelty gimmick like The Expendables, these old school action movies don't appeal to people anymore? Audiences were inundated with them in the 80s and 90s and now, after they've been wowed by the likes of the Matrix, Pirates, Transformers, Avengers, etc...why would a concept with simple shootouts and explosions appeal to people? You all saw how The Expendables II, despite being a better movie, made far less than the original. Why is that? The novelty had worn off for the most part, and the Arnolds and Stallones are no longer the sort of heroes that modern audiences identity with.

Tony has a good point. TE movies would have made much more in 80s when that type of action heroes was relatable. Look at the biggest non-franchise action movie of recent years - Inception. It`s an A grade example of the type of actioner that appeals to current audience. Sensitive hero? Check. Romance? Check. Bunch of actors who have crossover appeal to both men and women? Check. Dark content? Check. Mind bender? Check. Steroid-free? Check. That`s what people eat up nowdays, not some overly muscle-bound self-paroding undefeatable octogens.

Someone needs to be fired:

Posted Image

When you put that poster and your avatar together it shows exactly what`s right with the hero from your avatar and what`s wrong with the hero from the poster. One is what people relate to nowdays and the other is as outdated as is its marketing. Edited by fishnets

Okay but people should just stop with the " a movie not doing at least 150m dom-500m ww is a flop/disapointment" mentality. The Expandables 1 & 2 are great successes not big or enormous, they are making money and a third is in the pipeline.FYI, the number of people who went to see The Expandables 2 in America is the population of Sweden. The nostalgia audience for Expandables is enough for its producers but it seems this audience doesn't care if the old farts aren't together. We ll see if Stallone and Willis can do better, Willis obviously will have no problem doing better than Ahnuld...

Nobody said they were flops/disappointments. LMAO. That was exactly my point. These sorts of movies only do well nowadays if there's a gimmick added to it i.e. The Expendables.

That's such a fantastically horrid number for TLS, I have to think he lost a good chunk of his core fans to politics or his infidelity fiasco. I never figured it to open big (Sunday was always going to be brutal), but it was well directed and a perfectly fun movie. To open south of $6m for the 3 day?? I would have figured that to be the floor for the Friday number. Reviews can't do that, only pure apathy keeps that many people away opening night.

Movies like The Last Stand and Bullet to the Head are about as relevant as VCRs. Nobody wants to see crusty stars of yesteryear unimaginetively kill people except a very select few "macho" types like Algren. Now, Broken City is a flop that's a product of bad marketing and concept. They had no way to sell that movie, and the reviews killed it. Mark Wahlberg is, however, a hugely relevant star coming off the biggest hit of his career. And Crowe is at least more relevant than Arnie. So that's weird.
