wboxoffice
Can someone please give me examples of movies with big hopes when going into production and big star(s) in them, that were planned to get wide releases in theaters, but then at the last minute the plans for a wide release were cancelled and they ended up with a limited release? What are some examples, and what were the reasons?
AniNate
Most recent example I can think of is Anonymous. Supposed to be a big-time period Oscar bait film and gain new respect for Roland Emmerich among film critics, but the word-of-mouth never materialized.
Impact
Well the movie Ring of Fire was suppose to go to theaters-saw a trailer for it at The Perfect Storm. Was never released and was DTV in late 2001 under a different title.
Jake Gittes
Assassination of Jesse James? If I'm not mistaken WB fought long and hard with Dominik and Pitt about the film's length and pacing and when it couldn't have its way it pretty much dumped it. Although I'm not sure if they ever intended it to go wide right away, or were planning a platform roll-out with a later wide release from the beginning. Impact
Now back for this topic-there was Miss Potter. Was supose to go wide but never did. Texas Rangers-another one, kept on getting delayed and got released on just 404 theaters.
Jake Gittes
Yeah Anonymous is a great example.
fishstick
Some Fassy turkey with Kuryskanko went on on-demand as did some Knightmare/Worthington dud. Fingers crossed I Frankenstein goes DtV because it`s pointless to release such drek in theaters.
Impact
Now it did go wide-but Bloodrayne was reported to be on 2K theaters on its OW. It then lost more then half of its theaters and got released under 1K theaters.
AniNate
The Road was also supposed to go wide, but Weinstein pulled back at the very last minute, probably due to its not unanimously positive reviews coupled with its relentlessly dreary tone which rendered it dead meat at that time of year. Impact
Fair Game, did poorly limited.
Impact
If I could I could think of quite a bit more even...there was some horror film with Chris Pine that was suppose to go wide that was one of those After Dark films that got a limited release. wboxoffice
Does anyone know what happened with "Cadillac Records"? Did they initially plan to release it wide, but then they didn't because they didn't believe in the film's potential... or was it always their strategy to release it limited first in hopes of expanding, but then it didn't work out... Impact
Anyone can think of one older then Texas Rangers now? I think there was one just recently actually.
TLK
You should only count big studio movies as most Indie movies never get to see wide release even if they have big stars. That's just the Box Office economics these days. Unless you have $20 million lying around a wide release ain't happening and only major studios have that kind of cash.

Agreed, now I don't know why I remember this-but there was that Bridge of San Luis Ray that costed 25M and didn't even his 50K. But yes-I could say Anna K. as it never went wide-but don't know if they ever considered it. The ones I mentioned are ones that I remember were going to go wide at one point. SchumacherFTW
I can imagine Piranha 3DD was originally planned for a wider release, with the first Thanksgiving release date.
kowhite
Miley Cyrus had two movies in 2012 that were originally slated as theatrical releases. Both got dumped to straight to video (well the first one had a VERY limited theatrical release). They were called...LOL and So Undercover. The world is now a better place. I have to imagine all of those Bruce Willis DTV movies were at some point intended to go to theaters also.
Ezen Baklattan
There was some cheap animated film called Dino Time that came out last year. I saw posters for it at my multiplex, but it wasn't even tracked for box office numbers. It probably would have done Delgo numbers anyway.
Impact
Yeah I remember that too. It is like Ring of Fire.
Ezen Baklattan
I remember it looking awful too, although that can be said for any movie starring Rob Schneider.
