I had my suspicions but still saw this on the big screen - and while it delivers some beautiful images and a nice touch of bitterness, ultimately it fails as a feature; it's simply much too long. Still, the opening sequence is 10 minutes of pure childhood adrenaline/angst, and some of the sets and masks are really good, so I'd recommend it for "sampling" (= watch it with the fast-forward button firmly under your thumb).

I think it works as a wonderful look into the mind and imagination that children can have. For me this film was a big surprise. It even feels somewhat poignant. The kid playing Max gives one of the best child actor performances of recent years. Great score too. Spike Jonze is certainly one of the best directors around.

Has to be the most adult childrens movie ever

Its alright, though I think it tries too hard to be symbolic and deep and serious but comes off like a movie written by a child psychologist. Great performance from Max Records, I have to say. I really wish he had done more great roles like this.

3/5

Simply amazing. It's easy to be cynical and derisive of the studio system and a lot of times it can be justified but every now and then a film like this is somehow made. Seriously, this is a film that tries to capture childhood in a way few films can come close to. It's stunning, beautiful, and truly unique. The score is amazing as well.
