  1. How is Paramount going to find a new script before they start shooting sometime in the next six months? I don't like Orci at all, but he did want to make some sort of homage to the franchise with this movie and fix the timeline mess he started two entries ago. I have a feeling Paramount's plans could be even worse, although I guess commercial success is better than no franchise at all.
  2. The man who stayed 20+ years on the same place with his starship and his crew (and an unmentioned infinite source of food and energy) just...waiting.
  3. Yeah, I mean, that's just my personal view on what I expect from a Star Trek product, either in the form of a film or a TV episode.
  4. Absolutely. STID's story has actual concepts and ideas. It makes you think about the lines you are willing to cross when it comes to defend your people. Which is actually one of the main themes of the later seasons of Deep Space Nine. ST09 is great when it comes to introduce the characters, but when they are done with that you are left with a story about Romulans filled with plotholes and ultimately empty of any substance.
  5. Still, "real" Trek comes from the script, not necessarily from the director. If you don't have a coherent script with good ideas and meaningful stories...you get ST09 in the best case.
  6. Well, I'm going to be the exception and vote for First Contact. That main theme is sublime.
  7. Well, the problem with Worf is that there is very little left to explore of him as a character, considering he's been a main member of a cast for eleven seasons (seven on TNG and four on DS9). On the bright side, he is the definition of charisma. And if there's a known character that could deal with the pressure of building a show around him it's Worf. And it's been a while since the events of Voyager/Nemesis. I'm sure they can develop the story enough to put him in a new exciting situation. Now that I think about it, I LOVE the idea. They can make something fresh, but also related to the stories of the three previous 24th Century shows. An alien perspective might be the fresh angle the franchise needs on TV. I do think the Klingon storylines tend to get tiresome when they run for a long time, but this doesn't have to be totally Klingon-centric.
  8. Someone is coming back...and I'm very happy with it.
  9. The second half of the season looks promising. I like the idea of the "Queens of Darkness", although Merrin Dungey's costume of Ursula was ridiculous. But damn, I'm going to miss the Frozen cast. They were really perfect.
  10. I love the premise of this upcoming comic book, in which the ST09 crew helps out Sisko to fight the Dominion http://www.startrek.com/article/kirk-sisko-team-up-in-idws-latest-comics-out-wednesday And Q also pops out because...why not.
  11. This was aired last night on a Spanish TV network, and since I watched it for the last time in 2013, I got to consider it just as a movie, and not a massively anticipated book adaptation. I gotta say, I loved it. Probably I appreciate more aspects of it now. I think it's with HP1 and 4 the big 'blockbuster' of the series, concerning the magnitude of the action. It's a film just as big as a LOTR entry or any other major fantasy movie, which adds some variety to the series, because up until now it had been about 'adventures' that rarely implied battles of this scale. The only issues I find are the dialogue with the wand-maker and with Aberforth. I think those scenes rely too much on the words alone, and can be pretty boring, especially the first one, since is placed right at the start of the movie. There are also some situations that are resolved by pure chance, like when they escape from the fire figures on the brooms. That works in a book...but not in a movie. Aside of that, I think everything works. It has the right pace most of the time, a very good balance between dramatic scenes and comic reliefs, and it just makes a very good job on the moments that matter. I also like that it's strongly connected to the past movies, either in the form of flashbacks or taking back elements from them. It's to be expected, considering the story, but it's a nice touch nevertheless, very fitting for a 'final entry.'
  12. I agree that the franchise was on life support and that they needed to make something radical, but most of ST 2009 would be intact if we take out the time-travel storyline. There are big gaps in the story of the original characters left by TOS, enough to fill them with a new series of movies without having to turn to the trick of rewriting the little story we already knew. We never saw how the crew came together, and we ony got to see a part of the 'five-year mission' the original series was based on, for example. It's just a matter of perspective, I guess. The executives at the time thought that the best move was simplifying people's view of the series, making it clear that they didn't need to see any of the previous entries to fully appreciate the new material. (Edit: that the name of this thread is 'STAR TREK III' and not 'STAR TREK XIII' says it all, really). However, five years later, people have found the joy of discovering a myriad of crossed-storylines, spin offs and plotlines that cover numerous entries. So now the 'commercial' decision is to say people that if they have liked this, they have a lot more movies and TV shows to watch. The story was getting way better, and it was finally becoming the prequel series it was supposed to be, but reviewing the episodes you can tell the narrative was painfully outdated. They tried to reinvent the franchise (and the actual show on seasons 3 & 4) but most changes only applied to the aesthetics. It was understandable that Voyager carried on with that 90s path in its final seasons, but Enterprise should have been a very different show. In fact, I'm of the opinion that Voyager should have introduced some bold changes to the formula, but they got away with it at the time. Seven years later, it was too late for Enterprise to perform the same trick. Enterprise's final seasons aired at the same time that Battlestar Galactica's first steps, and by comparing both of them you can clearly see that BSG meant the future of science fiction on TV, and that Enterprise was the last product of an era that was coming to an overdue end.
  13. Slightly off topic, but I find hilarious that in an age when every major studio is desperately trying to build their own megafranchise with different inter-connected iterations, Paramount comes and dismantles the one they had been building over the last four decades, taking it back to a single crew and a single series of films. Of course, they couldn't have possibly anticipated what the future would bring, but it's fascinating to see how wrong a business man can be. No wonder why they are contemplating the idea of re-connecting the current films to the rest of the franchise (besides ENT) in the next movie.
  14. My 'first contact' was probably with the TOS movies when I was a kid, but what I remember as my 'breakthrough' as a ST fan were the reruns of TNG on a Spanish cable TV network. They always aired an episode before dinner time, and those moments are one of my fondest childhood memories. I probably was about 11-12 years. I watched all the TOS, TNG stuff with my father, but then I kept growing as a fan, and I got into DS9 and VOY, that I watched on dvds at the public library.
  15. Funny how well the Spanish films have performed in 2014, considering that many Hollywood films have had disappointing grosses in the last few years.
  16. Well, it's a little bit more than that: We'll see. It's a long shot.
  17. I would be happy with that. He did a good job with First Contact and Insurrection (however irrelevant the story of the latter might be). My biggest fear is that his style may be too classic for a series of films that are still fighting to reinvent and modernize the franchise. But I would definitely be on board.
  18. I love the "I'm outraged, but not as outraged as some of the Christians watching this" bit. I thought it was pretty funny.
  19. I'm not counting with good WOM for Exodus. At least the comments I'm hearing from friends are pretty terrible.
  20. Well, I hope they don't ditch the idea of I don't care for the rest. But I hope they finally hire someone who 'gets' Star Trek and who has a vision of where to take the franchise from now on. Actually, the end of the JJ Abrams/Orci era is a very good thing.
  21. First of all, this was very hard to do. My list mixes objective qualities with personal feelings, so don't mind if the order seems a little...controversial. 1 Six Feet Under 2 Battlestar Galactica - modern 3 Mad Men 4 The Simpsons 5 The Sopranos 6 Gilmore Girls 7 Star Trek The Next Generation 8 The X-Files 9 Futurama 10 Star Trek Deep Space Nine 11 Married With Children 12 Star Trek The Original Series 13 Family Guy 14 The Comeback 15 Arrested Development 16 30 Rock 17 Seinfeld 18 Parenthood 19 The Office US 20 Coupling (2000 UK show) 21 The West Wing 22 Damages 23 Downton Abbey 24 Orange Is The New Black ---- This is where the campiness begins ---- 25 Friends 26 How I Met Your Mother 27 Stargate SG1 28 Malcolm in the Middle 29 Courage the Cowardly Dog 30 That 70s Show 31 Lost 32 Grey's Anatomy 33 Desperate Housewives 34 Brothers and Sisters 35 Veronica Mars 36 House 37 Alias 38 Ugly Betty 39 Once Upon a Time 40 Alf
