  1. I haven't see AC yet but the concept for the video games seems like it would have been a great fit for a movie adaptation, though. It's nothing more than some easy to digest sci-fi at the beginning followed by some historical action/adventure. Granted, my knowledge of the game is limited to my experience playing the 4th game in the series (the pirate one) although they are largely the same apart from the setting. Still, at its core, Spielberg or maybe someone like Justin Lin could have taken the concept and turned it in a respectable summer popcorn flick.
  2. I'm not particularly impressed by the number; but I don't think it was heavily hyped or anticipated.
  3. I think there are a couple of reasons for this. From the critics' perspective, they have been watching all of the Oscar bait films during this time of year in addition to the mainstream cineplex fare. Their palates become accustomed to a fine French wine and suddenly the studios serve up some Mad Dog. They overreact and grade the mainstream fare more harshly than usual. The other reason relates to moviegoers. 2016 has been a brutal year for a lot of people and they are seeking to put the year (especially the election) behind them for a couple of hours while they watch a movie. If the movie accomplishes that for them, they are more likely to think the film is better than it is. So moviegoers are overstating movie quality while critics are understating it.
  4. It's too bad the internet (as we know it today or even in the late 1990s) wasn't around when Basic Instinct was released. The film had some massive buzz thanks to Sharon Stone's remarkable performance, both inside and outside of that police interrogation room. It's held up fairly well after almost 25 years. I definitely second Baumer's recommendation if you have not seen it.
  5. I think we have the first winner of what critic/media organization will write a bogus review in exchange for a name check during a television commercial for the film.
  6. I'm starting to grow a morbid curiosity about this film now that the reviews are becoming toxic. Before the reviews, everything about this film's story seemed so bland, unoriginal and predictable that I was going to skip it. Now these reviews have me thinking I need to see for myself how truly awful it is.
  7. I'd be perfectly fine if he did stay away from franchise films. It might translate to smaller paychecks in the future but he would almost assuredly have more creative control of his films.
  8. After Arrival and Blade Runner, Villeneuve needs to move from sci-fi to some other genre. If he has to direct a franchise film, I'd much rather see him direct an Indiana Jones film than a Star Wars film.
  9. This teaser could probably be deemed a success if its goal was to introduce a sequel to fans of the original. However, the vast majority of general audience members - especially overseas - has never seen the first film or has no memory/knowledge of it. For those people, it's just a movie with Dr. Han Jones and the hot guy from that one movie. Seriously, Gosling is in desperate need of an actual hit film which he drives rather than joins for the ride. I'm going to see this simply due to Villeneuve. Hopefully this film will return him to his Prisoners and Sicario levels of greatness which are easily two of the best films of this decade.
  10. Am I the only one who feels this movie is the love child of Solaris and Interstellar?
  11. So if my math is close, Civil War is roughly $244M behind TFA's 10 day gross. A Rogue One v. Civil War 10 day match-up might be very interesting to behold.
  12. Not sure if this was mentioned in the previous 150 pages; but does anyone know the last film to spend 10 or more weeks in the Top 10? TFA will hit that milestone this weekend given the duds that will be opening. Ultron spent 9 weeks which was the longest run of last summer; but I stopped at that point. I suspect it is an Oscar film. I will try to research this more as I have time. ETA: Never mind. Just needed to go back a couple more weeks. Home - that animated movie from last year that no one remembers but still grossed $177M spent 10 weeks in the Top 10 during the spring and summer last year. Who would have guessed?
  13. I have no idea what to think of Dirty Grandpa. Do Efron's films still attract teens and college-aged females or are gay men the only people who pay to see him now?
  14. The film is about a woman who invented a special mop. Anyone who thought this film was going to do gangbusters business is insane.
  15. I wonder if Sony has anything planned to help push Spectre above $200M or are they content to have the highest grossing film not to hit that milestone. It will pass GWTW sometime within the next few days to be the highest grosser below $200M. Looks like TFA crosses $850M on Sunday barring some other-worldly holds and it reaches that milestone on Saturday. Avatar adjusted will be passed in just a few more days, probably Saturday. Also it needs to average $6M/day through the end of the upcoming holiday weekend to grab that lofty 11th spot on the adjusted list. It may need Valentine's Day weekend to crack the Top 10, though.
  16. You should consult different sources. Both of these sites have predictions from a couple dozen experts and Leo is the unanimous selection to win. Or do your sources know more than all of these people? http://moviecitynews.com/2016/01/gurus-o-gold-down-to-the-nomination-wire/ http://www.goldderby.com/awardshows/experts/oscars-2015-nominations-nominations/best-actor.html
  17. Leo is not going to lose. He is the surest of all bets this awards season. He will win the Globe and will be an easy Oscar winner in February.
  18. Even if TFA fails to reach $1B domestically, it is definitely going to reach the Top 10 on the Adjusted list. Whether you like them all or not, every single one of those films is an undeniable classic. TFA is a worthy addition to that list. It's been far too long since a new film entered that rarefied air.
  19. It would appear ST3 will be the Tokyo Drift of this rebooted series.
  20. This seems like That Awkward Moment all over again. Some teens and college crowd will show up to see it, maybe some DeNiro fans. For this film to have prayer of hitting $30M total, it will need to be funny and DeNiro will need to have all of the best material. Efron and his naked ass cannot sell a movie on their own.
  21. Has anyone created a club for The Hateful Eight O/U Kill Bill V2? Based on this past weekend, the U is looking pretty good.
  22. If in the US/Canada, what city? Or what country are you in if outside the US?
  23. Happy Birthday and Happy New Year, Baumer. Seems like it was only yesterday when we were on the BOM forums.
