  1. Let me second the recommendation of Jackie Brown. The film is very entertaining with a terrific performance by Pam Grier. It made my list, fwiw.
  2. Possibly. However, Disney is the runaway leader when you add in merchandising. For WB, the films are the end product, mostly. For Disney, the films are merely commercials for products and product branding which bring in billions of bucks. Cars 3 was not made because the previous film was a massive box office or critical success.
  3. I think we have reached the point where IT has moved past the wildly successful trailer as its source of business to WOM and cultural phenomenon status now driving ticket sales. Studios should definitely learn this lesson from IT: a great trailer can lead to a huge opening weekend. Of course, the recent uptick in scary clown sightings/mythology in contemporary cultural helped as well.
  4. Breakdown made my list. It's a better action/thriller than many of its higher grossing brethren from 1997.
  5. WW needs a little under $3.33M to reach the big 4.00x. It's going to be tough and it's at least a couple of weeks away, depending on the holds for the next couple of weekends.
  6. @Tower OK, the message worked when I sent it while sitting on your profile page. The error appeared when I sent the message from my profile or when I tried to add to the message with Baumer.
  7. I received an error saying you couldn't receive messages which is preventing me from adding you to the conversation.
  8. I just submitted my list. I suspect half of my Top 10 will not appear in the Top 10 of any other user but I could be wrong. A couple of those films may not appear anywhere on any other list. I absolutely hated a lot of the big films from 1997 and I was not a happy patron at my local cineplexes for the most part.
  9. With actuals now in, Wonder Woman passed Iron Man 3 on Sunday and not on Monday as WW eked out a small increase on Sunday over Saturday to pass IM3. Now she just needs to find another $3.5M in the tank for that 4.00 multiplier.
  10. I was so excited for 1997 as the film adaptation of one of the best books I have ever read was coming to theaters and it was being directed by Clint Eastwood and was starring two terrific actors at the time - John Cusack and Kevin Spacey. I attended an opening day screening of Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil and I was disappointed. The film itself is fine and I enjoyed it; but it nowhere as monumentally entertaining as the book. Hopefully someone will remake the film, perhaps as a six episode TV series, as the book is an absolute masterpiece from the 20th century.
  11. Congrats to Wonder Woman (~$409,500,000) for passing Iron Man 3 ($409, 013, 994) today! Just another $3.5M or so to cross that next big milestone.
  12. I'm not sure if this is snark or ignorance of the current #2 film in the land.
  13. I wonder how much longer it will be before WW passes A:C in the dailies. It's release next week should speed up that event.
  14. It will be interesting to see if WW can pass IM3 by the end of the Labor Day weekend. It will be at roughly $407M by the end of Thursday so it would need to gross $2M from Friday - Monday. It will probably fall a little short but WW will pass IM3 a day or two later.
  15. I wouldn't expect much of an increase for WW this weekend, perhaps 25% with a slim chance at around 50%, which happens when films move into second-run or cheap theaters. Anything above $1.5M this weekend would be quite shocking.
  16. Early congrats to Girls Trip for passing $100M today. It should also finish at #10 for the summer. I don't think very many people were predicting either of those accomplishments before the summer started. The film is hysterical and anybody who has not seen it should definitely check it out.
  17. Looks like WW will finally pass SM1 on Sunday, maybe Saturday if it holds ridiculously well the next four days.
  18. I never read the book but I do share your opinion as Gone Girl was my favorite film of 2014 as well. Granted, the competition was weak as 2014 was a sub-par year for movies. Still, Gone Girl was exceptionally entertaining with terrific performances by Affleck and Pike - especially Pike. Studios need to release more adult thrillers as they are an underplayed genre nowadays.
  19. Barring an insanely strong hold this weekend, Girls Trip hits $100M on Tuesday or Wednesday of next week, right?
  20. Congrats to Wonder Woman for crossing that significant $400M milestone. It's the film and story of the summer without question. Now it's time to take down SM1.
  21. Why? He won an Oscar for his screenplay for A Beautiful Mind. That bullet point on his resume will keep him employed for as long as he wants to work. Whether or not he deserved that Oscar is another debate entirely.
