Ah I get what you all are saying now. Fair point. You see, I used Titanic as the anchor for what is abnormal and Avatar looks normal by comparison (with Sixth Sense and MBFGW joining Titanic as abnormals). If you instead use Avatar as the paradigm then yea, traditional summer blockbuster trajectories make Avatar look abnormal. You could do that with any film with great legs though. -

It's now been about 20 yrs since the reissue. Fun fact: If you watch Star Wars starting with Episode 1, it only gets better! -
There are plenty of Jacques Costeau wannabes out there. Those discoveries will get made. I want James Cameron to make movies. Oceanographers can do the research he's doing but they can't make movies like he can. There is nothing to be gained from deep-sea exploration anyway. It's outerspace where we need to focus, like Elon Musk.

Doh, you're right. Episode VIII then. That will be like two black holes colliding. Who knows what'll happen. (I can't see Cameron or Disney budging).

Normal as in its downward sloping trajectory (consistently declining weekends), not talking about the scale of the movie. -

No, I think Murgatroyd is right. IMO, Avatar's curve shape was normal (I guess maybe with the exception of that 2nd weekend but that was Christmas weekend anyway). It saw steady declines. It just happened to outgross other movies for 7 weekends. Sixth Sense, My Big Fat Greek Wedding and Titanic had abnormal runs. -

OMG..I didn't know Rambo II made that much. We have a winner. -

Gary Ross is weird. Directs Pleasantville, followed by Seabiscuit 5 years later. Both films did respectable business. He takes a 9-year sabbatical and returns to helm an indie film called Hunger Games. He is now underground again. -
Checks page 1 to see if Jaws is on the list. Yep. Job done. I'm out.

Yowza!! How is that possible? Answer: parodies were somewhat novel at the time methinks. Still not sure how/why Shrek 2 made so much. One of the most surprising boxoffice runs. -

Everybody knows trumpets and horns add at least $50-million to the final gross. Any brass instruments will do actually. -

Initially it was overlooked on the new BOM forums then someone (maybe it was Lady Eowyn or Baumer) created a thread to the effect of "Ugh guys, there's this movie, MBFGW, which cracked the top 10 in its 15th week and isn't slowing down". That thread blew up as MBFGW climbed the all-time ranks. To this day, one of the top two runs of all time. It's 26th weekend tally adjusts to $11+m. That's insane. Titanic made $2.1m at the half-yr mark. -

Those of us in the boxoffice forums at the time weren't sure who would win: Tomorrow Never Dies or Titanic. -

Box-office totals that make you say "whaat?" I find it hard to believe National Treasure 2 made $220 million (adjusts to $250m)!! Meet the Fockers - $279m ($357m adj!!) Anaconda adjusts to $120m Big Hero 6 has been the most silent $200m earner of all-time. Paul Blart adjusts to $165m The Greatest Showman Get Out -
