  1. I just finished compiling the HV sales for the last 8 months (September 2015 to May 2016) and here are some interesting facts. Top 5 Biggest Blu Ray sellers that were not released in that time frame (3 animation movies out of 9) 1. The Hobbit : The Battle of the five Armies (8M$) - The Extended edition was released during that time frame 2. The Hunger Games : Mockingway part 1 (5M$) 3. The Lego Movie (4M$) 4. Frozen (3M$) 5. Bunch of movies tied with 2M$ (TASM, THG, Tangled, IM3, X-MEN DOFP) Top 5 DVD sellers (8 animation movies out of 12) 1. Frozen (10M$) 2. Insurgent (8M$) Tied 3. Hotel Transylvania (7M$) Tied 3. The Lego Movie (7M$) 5. Bunch of movies with 6M$ (DM1, Tangled, BH6, THG Mockingjay 1) Some other movies with 5M$ gains (UP, DM2, Guardians of the Galaxy, Hobbit 3) Top 5 combined sellers (4 animation movies out of 7) T-1. Frozen (13M$) T-1. Hobbit 3 (13M$) T-3. The Lego Movie (11M$) T-3. THG Mockingjay 1 (11M$) 5. bunch of movie tied with 8M$ (Tangled, Hotel Transylvania, Insurgent) This shows the lasting power of animation movies on the HV market (especially DVD market)
  2. TFA officially enters the 100M$+ sellers on Blu Ray and currently is in 5th place. It should have no problem getting to rank # 3 with 120M+$, but catching up to Avatar and Frozen will take some time. If TFA follows Jurassic World sales pattern, it would reach #1 in 6-7 months. Unfortunately, TFA doesn't have Black Friday sales boost in its 6th week nor does it have Christmas holiday boosts in its 9th and 10th week. The best comparison would be Hobbit : An Unexpected Journey. If it follows the same pattern as H:AUJ, it should be at around 145M$ by year's end or roughly 10M$ behind Frozen and 15M$ behind Avatar.
  3. I'll veer off road a little bit here and post my favorite moments from the novels (in no particular order): 1 - The reveal that Luke Skywalker is Darth Vader's son to Mara Jade (The Final Command) 2 - The death of Ton Phanan (X-Wing : Iron Fist) 3 - The last stand of Ganner Rhysode (Traitor) 4 - The death of Anakin Solo (Star by Star) 5 - The fight to the death between Jaina Solo and Jacen Solo/ Darth Caedus (Invincible) 6 - The various philosophical conversations between Luke Skywalker and Vergere (Destiny's way) 7 - The fight and arrest of Kar Vastor by Mace Windu (Shatterpoint) 8 - The description of Count Dooku, Anakin Skywalker and Obiwan Kenobi before the fights (Revenge of the Sith) 9 - The Obiwan/Anakin fight (Revenge of the Sith) 10 - The original Trade Federation massacre at the Eriadu summit (Cloak of Deception) 11 - Yoda nearly turning Count Dooku to the light side ( Yoda : Dark Rendezvous) 12 - The Tycho Celchu trial (X-Wing : The Krytos Trap) 13 - The Wraith pirate life (X Wing : Wraith Squadron) 14 - Operation Emperor's Hammer, Project Starlancer and the final fight of the Lusankya (Behind enemy lines : Rebel Dream & Rebel Stand) 15 - The Jaina Solo training under Boba Fett (Legacy of the Force : Revelations) 16 - Corran Horn with the pirates fighting against Rogue Squadron ( I, Jedi) 17 - The Jacen Solo / Mara Jade fight ( Sacrifice) 18 - Jacen Solo turning to the dark side (Betrayal) 19 - Wedge Antilles escape from military prison (Betrayal) 20 - The various Thrawn schemes (Heir to the Empire, Dark Force Rising, The Last Command) Many many more...
  4. Both this magazine and The Numbers are extrapolating from Nielsen's reports. Every publication uses Nielsen for HV.
  5. The source is Nielsen and Nielsen tracks units, not dollars. Same goes for music sales. But the thing is that not every retailers report the sales. That's why they have to estimate the figures for missing retailers as well as an average $ figure.
  6. Nice to see a different take on HV with these charts. They probably have a different method for estimating sales than The-Numbers. Major difference for The Dark Knight. And for some reasons Star Trek 2009 is not there.
  7. I know it's a late bump, but all those titles you mentioned have been in release for 20+ weeks compared to TFA's 2 weeks. By the time TFA is at 20+ weeks, it will be close to 170M$.
  8. I don't see the comparison there. The last HP opened to 35% over its previous entry. It had a finale/rush factor that boosted its OW, while crippling its multiplier/legs. CW opened 3% over IM3, a pretty similar opening and had the same legs as IM3 and worse than Thor 2.
  9. Box office enthusiasts have a better memory than this. Even though SM3 broke the OW record, people are not mentioning this when talking about that movie. People will also mention that Marvel's team-up movies have been in decline ever since The Avengers got released.
  10. I still can't believe how bad the legs of CW were compared to the quality of the movie. Worse legs than IM3? that sucks.
  11. The thing is that they are partially right...but... at this point, almost every movie has a story that can be linked to a similar story already told in the past. Every genre, from animation to rom-com to horror to thriller...etc.. , nothing is original anymore. Movies are not original anymore. Try to find a movie with a completely original story never told in a different media (book, tv, comics, musical, cartoon...etc..). This is why the originality of the story is a bad argument.
  12. The herd mentality on these boards trashing Avatar is mind boggling to me. Avatar was a breakthrough movie in many technical aspects. Multiple characters, each with their personal character arcs are explored. A classic story about good vs evil and the hero's journey is handled flawlessly. The main critic I still see about this movie is the green lobby agenda, which I understand given how uneducated the general audience is. It's easier to believe Rush "the expert on everything" Limbaugh than people who actually studied the phenomenon.
  13. It changed the movie industry. 3D was a big part of the last 7 years. Storywise, it's a standard good vs evil and self discovery journey.
  14. Marek is closer and his OW and DOM total were also way closer than mine.
  15. Deadpool proved that you don't need family quadrant to release a successful movie.
  16. The last two cardboard models didn't do it for me. I want Megan back.
