  1. I saw an interesting article on LEGO's snub, saying because those nominations are chosen by members of that branch giving each movie a rating out of 100 (instead of based on number 1 votes), that they would have looked at LEGO was a technical animation standpoint (one of the reasons Stop-Motion always gets bad). Given that LEGO played parody on the beloved stop motion style, it could have been a turn off when compared to the safe styles of Song of the Sea, Boxtrolls, and Kaguya. They also would have recognized the brand name of Dreamworks and Disney more respectable than the newcomers Warner Bros. Not particularly fair, but it explains why LEGO may have gotten in for song but not animation.

  3. It's always fun to make blind predictions a year out and check back a year later to see how bad they were (reason for this early thread). Fairly similar to how we predict the box office a year in advance. Last year I predicted Boyhood and only Boyhood correctly a year in advance for best picture, everything else was fairly bad. In the acting cats I got a few lucky guesses with Patricia Arquette, Ethan Hawke, and Meryl Streep. My year out predictions Best Picture Demolition The Hateful Eight In the Light Between Oceans Joy Knight of Cups The Other Side of the Wind Silence St. Jame's Place The Revenant Suffragette Best Director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, The Revenant David O. 5. I remember being mad about Wreck-It Ralph losing to Brave. The LEGO Movie (which is much better than Ralph and one of the best animated movies out there) not even getting nominated while movies likes Boxtrolls and Big Hero 6 do (both worse than Brave) is a travesty.
  6. What I don't get the logic that just because you rewarded a great black movie the year before that it's okay to ignore a great black movie about a different subject. I don't think in this case it was a race issue though, I think it was paramount not sending the screeners. However I do think there is a unconscious race issue in Hollywood, where everyone wants to be progressive so they'll make deliberate attempts to give minorities and women roles but they end up being roles specifically fit for minorities (a black slave, a black maid, etc) just look at all the pat black Oscar nominees. There are few to no black/minority roles that get nominated that aren't in movies about racial/minority issues. This isn't even necessarily because Oscar voters won't vote for them but because 1.There are significantly less minorities in the industry than whites. This means whites write the stories and so (even though they aren't doing it out of deliberate ignorance) they write roles for whites, or the casting directors cast whites in roles that don't require the actor to be a certain race (and in some cases, like Exodus, they white wash them anyways). There needs to be an incentive to get more minorities in all of the areas of the industry, for example, there has been only one minority director to win Best Director and that was last year. 2.There seems to be a consensus of making white or black movies instead of making movies. Sure, there are some movies that need a mostly black cast such as Selma or 12YAS, and there are some that need a mostly white cast such as Lord of the Rings or to an extent Boyhood (based on the lead Linklater chose and the setting he chose, he had to pick what would racially represent that setting and the boy's family). But we need more movies that don't require this type of casting to be more like the Fast franchise, but also not do it simply for the sake of diversity. There needs to be a conscious effort to not be the movie that says, "But we have one token black man (who dies 30 minutes in), we aren't racist!" Don't make minorities tokens to the cast, treat them the same for roles like you would for whites or blacks. 3.Hollywood needs to stop putting racial issues in the boxes of Civil Rights and American Slavery, racial issues are much more complex and broad than that. There are more ways to address race issues than making a movie in those two eras (not that you can't make movies in those eras, it just seems like most movies addressing race take place in them because there is less controversy and it's obvious). We need more race movies like Fruitvale Station and less movies like Black or White. I think addressing those three problems is probably the first steps to help end the racial bias in Hollywood.
  7. So the Critical, Audience, and Award Precursor darling couldn't even pull an animated nom. That makes it worse.
  8. Marion Cotillard and The LEGO Movie, the two things I think of from these nominations (for completely different reasons) are trending. Speaks a lot.
  9. It's very unprecedented, and I honestly don't like the idea that a movie cannot be in the top 5 of anything (besides maybe song) but still be worthy of a BP nom. Even if all of those other categories it missed in were snubs.
  10. True, still that's two nominations and only two. Not completely out of the ordinary (Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close did it), but I am surprised. The nominations this year are very weird, only one really good surprise and a lot of very bad snubs.
  11. MARION COTILLARD!! I am sad I took her off my predictions because I thought it was hopeless, very nice surprise though. EDIT: Holy crap, The LEGO Movie didn't even get nominated. That is the biggest snub in a long time.\ And wow, Gone Girl was almost completely shut out.
  12. Maybe because sequels to big movies tend to increase overseas and decrease domestically? It's stats and trends, it doesn't mean anything except what to expect money wise.
  13. Linklater's been my favorite director for a while, he was very underrated and really deserves the praise he gets now.

  16. Why on earth did Christian Bale get nominated last year?
  17. One big snub people are looking over, there is no Boyhood in editing (Despite it originally being a frontrunner to win)
