  1. Yeah, someone at one of the studios emailed them his/her spreadsheet and they copied pasted it.
  2. I think $37 million is coming from Disney because everyone is reporting it without even any hint of Friday number.
  3. Natalie Portman wasn't interested in doing this movie unless she got an expanded role. Keep in mind that this was her first post-Oscar role and she had leverage even though she was contractually obligated to do this movie anyway.
  4. Two movies a year is not a problem as long as everything isn't connected back to The Avengers.
  5. So I am not the only one who thinks that Marvel will burn itself out in a couple of years at the volume they are churning out movies ?
  6. Lionsgate gave up most of overseas media rights to foreign distributors so I don't think they care much about reporting exact overseas numbers. On the flip side, thanks to huge presales the movie was profitable or close to being profitable for Lionsgate even before they sold a single ticket domestically.
  7. I think Barkhad Abdi is a legitimate contender for Best Supporting Actor Oscar.
  8. Jenelle Riley ‏@jenelleriley 3h SAG screening of August: Osage County--when title cards came up, biggest applause wasn't for Meryl or Julia, but Margo Martindale. Retweeted by Kristopher Tapley
  9. Sophie Nélisse should be close to a lock if they campaign for her in this category. Best Actress category is a lot tougher this year.
  10. With 80million this will fall short of $200 million. Second Weekend - 30-35 Third Weekend 14-17 million
  11. High previews translate into lower midnights. Midnight viewings are for fanboys and fangirls . However, 8 PM shows mean the fanboys/fangirls are the ones who snap up preview tickets leaving midnights for GA and GA don't usually show up for midnight showings. I think there is a reason why 8 PM shows haven't translated into any extraordinary box office performances so far.
  12. They were forced to report them separately as Rentrak was not tracking Walmart sales. We don't even know how many tickets were actually sold by Walmart. $12 million is the price the chain paid for the 1 million tickets block.
  13. I have been thinking low 80s for a while. The Avengers effect is real but who knows how long will it last ? This is why I am not very high on GOTG. Marvel is trying to link all of its properties back to The Avengers and people (GA not the fanboys) are going to get tired of the two movies a year deal in a couple of years tops.
  14. Harvey's Best Picture and Best Director nominees are a bit weak this year but he will get a lot of his actors/actresses nominated.
  15. This is bad. 'Jane Got a Gun' Producers Sue Director Lynne Ramsay: 'Abusive' and 'Under the Influence' http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/thr-esq/jane-got-a-gun-producers-653804
  16. Albert Brooks ‏@AlbertBrooks 1m I'll miss that kid in Blockbuster telling me everytime I went in, "We don't have any of your movies except for Nemo."
  17. Well, he did American Psycho and I think it fucked him up a bit as he was involved in a couple of violent incidents after that movie.
  18. I still can't get over his weight loss for The Machinist. Other actors have lost weight for movie roles but he barely weighed 100 pounds and he is 6+ feet tall.
  19. Last Vegas must be playing very well with the older crowd. It bodes well for its legs.
  20. I am about 95% sure that Tom Hanks won't campaign for both Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor. He can still get nominated for both categories, though.
  21. Ender's Game distribution from IMDB. Production Cost -$110 million Presales +$44 million P&A - $ 54 million (say) Total Negative Cost $120 million. If the movie makes $80 million in US, Lionsgate will get around $44 million so they are still short about $76 million which they should be able to make up with homes media and TV rights revenue from US, Australia and Europe. Even if the movie is doing underwhelming business I don't think will lose any money.
  22. Both of you are correct but big studios have the capability to absorb big losses that Lionsgate doesn't have. Disney can handle one or two flops every year on its own.If that wasn't insurance enough, Disney movie business is a small part of Disney empire which can keep Disney studios afloat for a few years even if they were to fall on hard times. Same is true of Universal (NBC/Comcast), Sony and Warner Bros. to an extent. You need to make a lot of investments in order to set up distribution in 50+ territories and even with infrastructure in place P&A is expensive everywhere and there will be big bombs now and then. They have opted for a strategy that relies on presales. They don't usually greenlight big movies until they they are sure that they will make enough money from foreign presales. This is a strategy that will hurt you if you have a The Avengers on your hand and you don't know it but it protects you if you end up with a turkey like John Carter or worse.
  23. I won't be surprised if the movie is underwhelming with only JLaw and BCoop getting nominations. I have never believed that Amy Adams has much of chance in a year like this and the Best Actor field is too crowded for Bale, IMO.
  24. This is how Lionsgate does its international business as they don't distribute movies themselves in overseas markets. They sold Breaking Dawn 2 for $175 million (Budget $130 million), Now You See Me $50-55 million (budget $75 million), etc. The Hunger Games also recovered most of its $80 million budget from foreign presales. This is a good risk-averse strategy for a small distributor and it keeps them competitive with major studios that have the ability to take big risks in hopes for bigger rewards.
