  1. Who Framed Roger Rabbit - The toon elements are hit or miss nowadays, but the noir story is surprisingly strong with a rather intricate plot focused on real estate, of all things.Explorers - The first two acts are a great testament to the wonder of the space age, and the way kids were in that period. The effect rushed production had on the third act is noticeable, though. Jerry Goldsmith’s score is fantastic.

  6. That part felt rather out of place in the film.
  7. No. It's fallen below the top 5 a number of times on Weekdays. It was #7 on Christmas Day, even.
  8. Saved - A combination of Mean Girls and Juno for the Christian set. It’s got an iffy ending, but is otherwise quite solid.Mission: Impossible II - Better than I remembered. Despite a really weak third act that comprises little more than action set pieces, the film is still pretty enjoyable.

  10. Is Lego a thing at all in Asia? I know it has a huge European and American presence, but I'm not sure about the rest of the world.
  11. It isn't just the number itself. It's also the nature of the market, the type of film in that market, the competition from the local industry, and so forth. For years, superhero films were almost entirely an American phenomenon. That seems to be changing, but it's a slow process, and it's mostly taking effort for these films to have a more international appeal. In an absolute sense, 10M may not seem like that much in a market like Japan. But in the sense of this film, it seems a perfectly good result.
  12. Last night & today: Rise of the Guardians - Fun concept, terrible title. Also, it’s sad how much better Frozen does the snow and ice effects. The Croods - Weaker story-wise than Sanders’ previous efforts, but it’s still fun enough. And the fantastic camerawork and environments are great to behold. The Hunter - Good, but it would have been nice to delve more into the human dynamics around supposedly extinct animals.Glengarry Glen Ross - Great dialogue, but the direction isn’t especially inspired.
  13. Not comprehensive, but I checked some areas that seemed like they'd be well situated for long runs. There was a period from Friday, October 2, 2009 until Sunday, April 25, 2010 that managed it, thanks in part to Avatar's leggy run. There were basically four low days there for that week, and then the 1 million run lasted from Friday, April 30 until Tuesday, September 7. And then after two more low days, it had another run that lasted from Friday September 10 until Sunday, January 30, 2011. Also, Tuesday, Dec 13, 2011 went until Tuesday, Sept 4, 2012 with only one day below 1 million (the Thursday before The Avengers opened.)

  16. Today's movies: The Seven Year Itch - Funny in parts, but the core concept is boring, so it’s ultimately kinda bad. It hasn’t aged well at all.Atlantis: Milo’s Return - An attempt to start an Atlantis TV series. Fails mostly because Disney never executed well on the great concept Atlantis promised.Serious Moonlight - Never really gets dark enough to be a truly black comedy, so it’s just sorta a funny-ish movie about mostly terrible people.Rent - The fact they managed to get just about all the original musical cast back means the music itself is good, but doesn’t save it from Chris Columbus’ lackluster direction.
  17. So just about everything was estimated high by about 300k?
  18. Today's movies: Spitfire - The first time I believe I’ve seen an Albert Pyun film. Despite an energetic effort by Kristie Phillips, it’s terrible. But at least it’s mostly an enjoyable terrible.Super - An uneven balance between awkward, funny, and grotesque. It really only shines when Ellen Page is on screen.
  19. It's really crazy when you consider that they're distributed by Fox, now, which ALSO has its own animation studio with Blue Sky.
  20. Just from skimming the conversation, I really need to see TLR. It sounds cracktastic.
  21. Huh. Okay. Not how I would have expected or done a revival of the Disney Afternoon properties, but I suppose that could work. Hopefully it'll be more intelligent and engaging than G-Force, Alvin & the Chipmunks, or The Smurfs.
  22. Oh, I won't be broken up if it doesn't happen. Just be a bit more icing on the cake, so to speak.
