  1. Well, big Miyazaki numbers in general would be nice. But SA would probably mean it'd end up #1 WW for 2013.
  2. I want it to do Spirited Away numbers.
  3. Up to two films on my list. I wonder if I'll ever think of a third.
  4. Looking at it optimistically: Current total - 810 US - 55 (Enough to get past 400) Korea - 30 Japan - 100 China - 30 Sweden - 10 Other Markets - 30 Total: 1.065, just over TS3. I think it's a long shot, (still unknown if US can get to 400, for instance) but it's possible.
  5. Today's movies: Kon-Tiki - Amazing. Another film I need to show my friends at some point.Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away -Filming Cirque is like filing a magic act: the simple fact that it’s not live removes a lot of the wonder. When you add in all the tools of filmmaking (cuts, zooms, slo-mo), it makes it seem even less amazing.Big Trouble in Little China - Not great, but surprisingly good for an American-made martial arts flick. Deserved cult status.Mulan II - Doesn’t have the scope of the first, with some cringing story choices, but still isn’t bad. It’s always nice when Lea Salonga gets to sing.
  6. The continued overperformance in Korea and the possible huge run in Japan make me think that not only is 1B looking good, but it might even challenge TS3's WW gross for biggest animated ever.
  7. Yeah. I just watched it yesterday and it holds up very well. I'm considering starting an Exodus under Prince of Egypt club.
  8. Oh, we're doing the Dreamworks list, now? Great: HTTYD Very Good: The Croods KFP KFP2 Prince of Egypt Good: Rise of the Guardians Shrek Road to El Dorado Okay: Madagascar Antz Sinbad Meh: Bee Movie Over the Hedge Madagascar Crap: Shrek 2 Haven't seen: Shrek 3-4 Madagascar 2-3 Monsters vs. Aliens Shark Tale Puss in Boots Megamind Turbo Spirit I'm not counting any of the Aardman co-productions.
  9. WiR is amazing, and probably should have won the Oscar. However, I can't entirely fault Brave as the choice. I think it's probably Pixar's most underrated release, especially since consensus seems to be that it's terrible. It has technical flaws, but the storytelling decisions are amazing. (Seriously: a four-quadrant film that focuses on the relationship between a mother and daughter is astounding.) Paranorman also deserves praise. First obviously gay character in an American feature animation, I believe. Rise is fun, but not great. It might be one of the stronger Dreamworks efforts, but that's not especially difficult, given how bad some of them are.
  10. I can only think of one movie to nominate. This may take me some time looking through some lists.
  11. Hmm... I missed this, apparently. Oh, well. There's always next year. My top 10, in no particular order, would probably be: TDK Thor American Splendor Scott Pilgrim Iron Man X2 Spider-Man 2 Red Hellboy II The Rocketeer Dredd Hrm. That's 11. I'm not sure which one misses out on the list.
  12. I wonder about those 30-40 people that went to see it at each of those theaters. Actually it could be more if it's playing in discount theaters now. Man, what if there's only a single showing each day at each of those, and it's just jam packed. 70 people, watching Percy Jackson. Who are these people? How did they get there? Do they ever leave? Or is there only way out if a theater decides to drop the movie? What if, sometime in the far distant future, when our sun is a cold cinder, there's still a single theater, showing Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters. The people inside want to leave. Their popcorn is empty. The sodas have run dry. They want to leave, but they can't. This is Hell.
  13. Today's movies: Event Horizon - Unimaginably stupid execution of what could have been a neat idea. Not even enjoyably bad.Prozac Nation - Despite a strong performance from Christina Ricci, it never really gets engrossing.View from the Top - A Romcom that doesn’t seem either romantic or funny. The Prince of Egypt - Some iffy script decisions in the first half don’t undermine the great animation and music.Brother Bear 2 - Pretty good, for a direct-to-video Disney sequel.
  14. I think they'll have some goodwill going for them. BH6 could get to 700+, especially if it takes off in Asia. Zootopia might be lower, but I think Giants has potential to cash in on Frozen goodwill. The big issue is that the quality needs to remain high. The problem with the Renaissance was that the studio had four films of increasing audience engagement, culminating in TLK. But then the next two were Pocahontas and Hunchback, which weren't anywhere near the level of quality of the previous four. (Poca is not very good at all, and Hunchback was uneven.) Before Frozen, Disney was probably looking at a 500 WW as a good performance: 175 DOM, 325 OS. WiR was a bit under that, but close. After Frozen, they probably can say that's a baseline performance, and they should get some goodwill benefit for an additional boost in some cases. (Scary awesome thought: If Tangled was The Little Mermaid, and Frozen is BatB, then WiR was Rescuers Down Under. Imagine if BH6 performs like Aladdin, and is even bigger.)
  15. I wish I could take that bet, too. (However, if it does get to 1B before Japan, that would be awesome. Probably means it's beating TS3 WW.)
  16. My friends and I had our monthly movie night last night. I got my chance to choose the films, so went with a Lonely Sci-Fi theme, pairing Moon and WALL-E. None of them had seen Moon before, so it was great to show them.
  17. It would be difficult for it to only make 900 million at this point. Just based on the current markets, the US and Korea alone will probably add another 60 million. 900 would mean that in all other cases, including Japan, China, and Sweden, it would only earn another 30 million. It may not make 1B, but 900 is pretty much a guarantee.
  18. If it does so, I believe it'll be Scorsese's highest grossing film worldwide. Edit: Holy shit, I can't read. Just took a nap and realized how bad my comprehension was.
  19. Today's movies: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang - Removed from childhood, this is extremely weird. It reeks of a Mary Poppins knock off: less charming and inventive, and the children characters are more annoying. It's also surprisingly based on a novel by Ian Fleming. (Truly Scrumptious would fit right in as a classic Bond Girl name.) Somehow, the thing lasts nearly 2.5 hours, so it's excessively bloated. The fantasy plot that takes up the latter half is mostly terrible, but the Sherman Brothers' songs are fun and catchy. The Fox and the Hound - Not the worst of Disney's Dark Age, but definitely one of the studio's weaker efforts.
  20. Calendar year is an idiotic statement for box office. Films have releases that bridge the new year all the time. I mean, does that mean Avatar wasn't the biggest movie of 2009? But it was the biggest movie of 2010? And Return of the King wasn't the biggest movie of either 2003 or 2004? And Catching Fire isn't the biggest movie of 2013? The best you can say is that DM2 is currently the biggest animated movie of 2013. In a few weeks it will no longer be.
  21. Very interesting how different people have different views on what is crap or not.
