  1. Gee, thanks for reminding me of that scene, Coolio.
  2. My guesses of the nominees I've seen: Affleck: When he tells the police about how his home burned down. Garfield: "I don't know how I'm going to live with myself if I don't stay true to what I believe." Gosling: "City of Stars." Washington: "What law is there sayin' I got to like you?" Portman: "There won't be another Camelot." Stone: "Audition" (although I'm hoping they go with "No, Jamal, YOU be trippin'." lol). Streep: "They may say I couldn't sing, but no one can say I didn't sing." Ali: "In moonlight, black boys are blue." Bridges: No clue, but I hope it's the scene with the surly old lady waitress with him and Gil Birmingham lol. Hedges: Panic attack by the refrigerator. Patel: Maybe the scene after the party where he and Rooney Mara argue? I'm stumped. Shannon: His scene in the diner with Gyllenhaal? I honestly have no clue. Davis: "I gave 18 years of my life to stand in the same spot as you!" Harris: Her final scene in rehab. Kidman: When she tells the story of her childhood to Patel and why she chose to adopt instead of having children. Spencer: "Just because that's the way it is doesn't make it right." Williams: Her final scene with Affleck.
  3. Where we can guess what their clips will be. Spoilers are allowed (since they have often picked spoilery clips from time to time), so beware. The Nominees: Best Actor Casey Affleck, Manchester by the Sea Andrew Garfield, Hacksaw Ridge Ryan Gosling, La La Land Viggo Mortensen, Captain Fantastic Denzel Washington, Fences Best Actress Isabelle Huppert, Elle Ruth Negga, Loving Natalie Portman, Jackie Emma Stone, La La Land Meryl Streep, Florence Foster Jenkins Best Supporting Actor Mahershala Ali, Moonlight Jeff Bridges, Hell or High Water Lucas Hedges, Manchester by the Sea Dev Patel, Lion Michael Shannon, Nocturnal Animals Best Supporting Actress Viola Davis, Fences Naomie Harris, Moonlight Nicole Kidman, Lion Octavia Spencer, Hidden Figures Michelle Williams, Manchester by the Sea
  4. Is this about to turn into a Lord of the Rings vs. La La Land debate? Because lord have mercy I want no part of it.
  5. I think La La Land is on par as Return of the King in terms of Best Picture winners. Stone me all you want, Tolkien fans.
  6. There's always the MTV Movie Awards...
  7. SAG didn't nominate Huppert so I guess they all should turn in their cards.
  8. Clearly The Futurist thinks they should've nominated Batman v Superman: Dawn of Exhaustion for Best Picture.
  9. This year was a huge win for smaller studios by the way. Arrival, Fences (both Paramount), and Hidden Figures (Fox) are the only major studios represented in Best Picture. The rest goes to: Lionsgate, who have 4 movies with La La Land, Hacksaw Ridge (both on behalf of Summit), Hell or High Water (on behalf of CBS Films), and Manchester by the Sea via their Roadside Attractions branch (on behalf of Amazon); A24 with Moonlight; and Weinstein with Lion. Between last year (Oscar wins for Room, Amy, and Ex Machina) and this year (Moonlight and a nom for 20th Century Women), A24 is officially here to stay.
  10. I think Actress is in the bag for Stone unless Huppert surprises in the end (and her movie will obviously be a much more difficult sit for most members than La La Land will be). Portman really needed to have an undeniable movie to justify a second Oscar so soon, and that didn't turn out to be the case. Thanks for making my point.
  11. My favorite nonsense post in this thread so far is "don't know who the hell over half of nominees are (cause they are in movies I don't care about)." Then what the hell are you doing on a movie website then, unless you just mentally block out any movie that doesn't play in at least 3,000 theaters? The nominees this year are a pretty famous/instantly recognizable bunch (with the only exceptions being possibly Ali and Negga and obviously young Hedges).
  12. I have to say I'm surprised that the worst nomination is not Mel Gibson (loved Hacksaw Ridge but him as a person...), but Suicide Squad being an Oscar-nominated film. To quote Cate Blanchett back when she presented the same category it's up for a few years ago, that's gross.
  13. I'm just so relieved that Lucas Hedges didn't get snubbed. Really did think he was going the way of Shailene Woodley after ATJ won at the Globes, and three under 30 actors was never gonna happen in either of the male categories.
  14. This is actually one of the better lineups in recent years, I think. I'd rank the Best Picture nominees: 1. La La Land (A) 2. Manchester by the Sea (A) 3. Arrival (A) 4. Moonlight (A) 5. Hell or High Water (A-) 6. Fences (A-) 7. Hacksaw Ridge (A-) 8. Lion (A-) 9. Hidden Figures (B+) The 2010 lineup is probably my favorite so far this decade, though.
  15. Maybe he and fellow former Mouseketeer Justin Timberlake could do a medley of all the nominees. Really, just watch them make JT perform all of the nominees like when they brought Beyoncé to be the diva of the Oscars and sing half the nominees 12 years ago.
  16. I actually think this is a really strong lineup of movies this year. Hidden Figures is my least favorite of the 9 and I still gave it a strong B+.
  17. Bleecker Street got lucky with that random Bryan Cranston nomination last year too so, hail Bleecker Street?
  18. The thought of Gosling live-singing is an even more terrifying prospect. I'm hoping they don't do it.
  19. The Original Song performances will probably be a mess this year. Will Gosling and Stone even perform?
  20. That 13 Hours nomination legit made me laugh. Never thought I'd see the day a Scorsese movie and a Michael Bay movie got the same number of Oscar nominations but here we are.
  21. I'll be surprised if anything but The Jungle Book takes him Visual Effects. The work done on the animals was something else.
  22. Should be exciting to see how the nominees fare at the box office now (except Hell or High Water, since that's now out on DVD). La La Land and Hidden Figures will continue raking in the cash, while Manchester by the Sea should cross $50M now. Moonlight and especially Lion should see nice bumps now too.
  23. Everyone is always quick to jump to how Streep only gets nominations just because she's Streep at this point, but she's still by far one of the best actresses working today with an undeniable commitment to her craft. Considering how baity her role in Florence Foster Jenkins is, it's really not surprising they fell for it.
