  1. Last weekend was obviously the big weekend for it coming off the Golden Globes victory. It's still very much on track for $150M, though Chicago is most likely out of reach now.
  2. The soft to poor numbers for all of Patriots Day, The Founder, Silence, Live by Night, A Monster Calls, and 20th Century Women (all of which debuted in limited release on the same weekend) make me hopeful that studios will realize that it's not wise to crowd up the end of the year with Oscar contenders unless they really are Oscar contenders. A movie like 20th Century Women could've become a solid Hello, My Name is Doris type of success in like March or April. Funnily enough, Hidden Figures also opened on Christmas Day in limited release as well and is looking to make more than all 6 of those movies combined.
  3. Well, it definitely overperformed. You would've been declared insane if you thought it would open to $40M+ just two weeks ago.
  4. James McAvoy's vehicle making almost as much as Mark Wahlberg's and Ben Affleck's will in their entire runs combined. What a time to be alive.
  5. Sundance does land a hit every now and then. Remember when Precious screened and everyone screamed "Mo'Nique is gonna get an Oscar!" afterwards? But yeah, calling anything one year out never goes well.
  6. I guess it depends who picks it up, and when they release it. At the very least, Jason Mitchell and Mary J. Blige sound like legit Supporting contenders (the prospect of the latter being an Oscar nominee is exciting).
  7. Mudbound is getting praised at Sundance. Excited to see who will pick it up.
  8. I'm half-laughing at you. It doesn't hold a candle to The Sixth Sense (it is on par with Unbreakable, though).
  9. August 2002: The release of xXx and a Shyamalan thriller January 2017: The release of xXx and a Shyamalan thriller Are we sure we're not frozen in one particular moment in time.
  10. McAvoy's performance in this is something else. It's definitely the most challenging role of his career so far, but the fact he's able to blend it all together seamlessly is an incredible achievement. Maybe the Golden Globes will bite if the category ends up dead in terms of serious contenders.
  11. Scorsese, Marky Mark, and Batfleck have all had their asses handed to them by The Stone Age and Cookie Monster here. What a time to be alive.
  12. Most theaters that added Silence only gave it one show at night while Monster Trucks played during the day. Even so, it did awful. I can't say I'm surprised though, I knew after a dozen people walked out during my showing while it was still in limited release that it wasn't gonna have any mainstream appeal.
  13. I don't know why but every time I see a new post in this thread, I expect it to be news that the movie has been pulled from release. Eh.
  14. Silence, my god. Live by Night will be losing at least 2,000 theaters next weekend, yeesh. The Resurrection of Gavin Stone somehow is gonna manage a $1K PTA for the weekend. Congrats, I guess.
  15. I honestly have no idea what to expect from A Dog's Purpose next weekend after this deadly controversy. Won't be surprised if Universal quietly dumps it in less than 2,000 theaters.
  16. $150M is still possible but Chicago is likely out of reach. Still an excellent run it's having, though. Hidden Figures is killing it, wow. And Patriots Day won't even make $35M in total, oof.
