  1. Oh. Emoji did fine, nothing great but it's fine. Opening to $25M on a $50M budget is OK particularly when its a kids movie.
  2. Saw a trailer in the cinema a couple days ago, this had gone completely under my radar. Looks rad.
  3. Counterprogramming to what? It's the biggest film out...
  4. It was a given that Dunkirk would be big but this is seriously impressive... could seriously be looking at up to £60M if it keeps holding like this, which it should given theres so little competition. £27M after 10 days is bonkers.
  5. the IMAX near me is sold out tonight and it's a freaking Thursday.
  6. I watched it again last night, really really liked it although I do think it's probably too long considering not that much actually happens in the film. It's a shame it's not doing better but it's quite a meaty, heavy film. It really pushes the limits of a 12A rating though - and I don't know why they didn't go for a 15 (R rating) given that this will appeal to precisely 0 families with young children. The ending was fine, showing that the human race destroyed itself, the apes didn't do it. Although at first I was slightly disappointed there wasn't more of a battle between apes and humans, it makes sense. I like the parallels to the original and some of the symbolism. It's still nowhere near as complex as the original movies but regardless, it's endlessly better than 99% of stuff that comes into the multiplex. I am glad it's possible to make films like this. This trilogy has been brilliant.
  7. The original movie is set in 4000something, this trilogy is set in the current day. The references in this movie are just nods to the original series. The two series are not actually connected.
  8. Does Apes have many more territories to open in? And what dates the China release? The whole thing is looking pretty bad at the moment, doing poorly domestic and OS. Although I seem to recall Dawn taking a while to build up to the 700M it grossed.
  9. Lots of very impressive shots and sets, but not much more than that. A tech demo can only go so far before you get bored. I can't name a single character let alone attempt to describe any of them. In a film like this it's kind of hard to go along with it without any way in to the characters. I didn't know anything about the evacuation before seeing the film so didn't know how it ended - but I really couldn't care less during the movie. I mean I was engaged enough, but whether they all got killed or they escaped it wouldn't have bothered me either way. Which given that you don't see a single enemy person in the film (which I hadn't realised until writing this sentence) really speaks to how little I cared about the characters. I'd also try to pick a few holes in the plot but I don't care enough to do so. That being said, I am glad it is possible to make films like this on such a large budget. I'm not especially a fan of Nolan but I'm glad he is able to make the films he wants to make, as opposed to most tentpole releases which consist of bland CGI nonsense trying to sell you toys.
  10. Just saw Dunkirk, technically extraordinary but I couldn't have cared less about any of the characters if I tried. Very cold and clinical filmmaking. Usual Nolan ah although fortunately there's not much dialogue for him to screw up.
  11. It's very dark and as said above feels quite heavy, very little humour etc. But it's totally worth it, I can't remember the last tentpole film that was this good.
  12. There's a new IMAX opened yesterday near me thats showing it in digital IMAX, and the cinema down the road has a 70mm print... So if I watch them both back to back it's 70mm IMAX yeah?
  13. Phantom Menace's superb "second weekend" drop is mostly attributable to it opening on a Wednesday and second weekend being a holiday...

  15. Tomato Law is also based nearly exclusively on American critics... try finding all the Chinese reviews on RT. For all you know the Chinese reviews for Pirates of the Caribbea are better than the reviews for Wonder Woman. It's all a matter of perspective.
  16. Cornetto Trilogy - The World's End is a let down Back to the Future - the second one sucks Godfather - part 3 is a let down Before - yep fantastic trilogy but not quite as good as this one Toy Story - third one is a let down Dark Knight - the second one is not very good Bourne - I don't like any of the bourne films The other ones I haven't seen (or at least haven't seen all 3) It's rare to find a trilogy that is consistently high quality, but this is one of those rare occasions. "Great" trilogies: 1. Star Wars 2. Lord of the Rings 3. Planet of the Apes reboot 4. Before 5. Kung Fu Panda All other trilogies seem to have a weak link in them, in my opinion at least. Like I would love to consider Indiana Jones to be a great trilogy as Raiders and Last Crusade are two of my favourite movies, but Temple of Doom is a let down so that disqualifies it.
