Pretty sure many of them knows. This unofficial blackout period is known to many and the period ended with HT3 on Aug 17. Just like The Great Wall, it is in English but gets a December release date and GA knows it’s a co production. Key here is that in the past 2-3months, the supply of Hollywood Movies is very rare, and this may be a factor for the stronger pre-sales and front-loadedness.

Doing well here in Singapore, but it’s a really small market. only reason is that it is filmed here and many of the casts are from here.

Sincere apologies if i offended anyone, there are 10k votes on Maoyan, and the negative reviews are much more than 10... There a few reviews like that on maoyan and tieba, too many to scroll through and find it back. but i definitely saw some. I am not generalising Marvel fans - i like marvel as well, but i was just stating what i saw - and apparently this offended many? As for big brother, the film, it has over 10k votes on maoyan and is at 9.0...so i am not sure what movie you have watched? I watched it myself and i see audiences tearing up. I mean you can just google audience reviews from from other parts of Asia. Saying its "sh!t" is a little overboard don't you think? Once again - i hope both films do well, China is a big enough market to have numerous films opening together on the same weekend. We don't need to bash one film to promote another. Cheers

Might be tougher than we think - 1) This is not a genre of Donnie Yen’s strength as this is an education movie, instead of his usual action movie. Even though there are some sick fight scenes in the movie. 2) It is primarily a HK film, not a mainland Chinese film (like Donnie’s Monkey King or Special ID), and focused a lot on HK’s education system 3) almost 0 marketing and weak distributor, distributor is really just banking on Donnie’s star power - many mainland audiences will watch a Donnie Yen movie as long as they see him on the poster, but that does not mean there should be almost 0 marketing 4) I see many Marvel fans already putting 1 star for this movie to remove competition. Maoyan score has dropped to 9.2, but based on the quality I suspect it will still hover around 9.0 in the end. Anyway this film has done very well in Singapore and Malaysia and may be the top Chinese film in these 2 countries for 2018 - just not sure about China as the China distributors is crazy to let it compete against Ant Man 2 and MI6 will. i genuinely hope all the films do well.

Wow. Donnie Yen’s movie - Big Brother getting really strong word of mouth from Midnight previews. 9.5 on Maoyan? Think it will stabilise around 9 - I watched it here in Singapore as well, one of the best Asian films I have seen in the last 3 years, so I am not surprised with its reviews. Just surprised why it is 100minutes instead of the the 102 minutes in other parts of Asia. Understand many of you are here to see Ant Man’s box office, but this is the China Box office forum so let’s give a little bit of space to local films too not forgetting Donnie yen is a part of Disney (he was Chirrut in rogue one and going to be the first billed male actor in Mulan), hope both does well this Summer holiday!

TigerPaw replied to Corpse's topic in International Box Office
I think that is because Sunday for Solo is a national discount day hence better weekend proportion.- 24,124 replies

No one in China knows him. He doesn’t even speak mandarin well - you have seen the dark knight right? He was in it - and his mandarin was pathetic. i am a Singaporean and I am proud that Chin Han is in these Hollywood movies but don’t count on him to get China Box office. It is almost like say Rose Tico (Kelly Marie Tran), a Vietnamese.. can help boost China BO for Last jedi... just because these people look Chinese, does not mean they are mainland Chinese.

To make matters worse - Many Co-Production / Hollywood films get the wrong Chinese stars.. Huang Xiao Ming is often criticised as a Box office poison with bad acting.. For EP3, they got Max Zhang in - who again has no good box office track record in China, he had a small role in Pacific Rim 2 and did not help the box office. at all So far for Cross-over appeal - it is still the legendary 3 - Jackie Chan/Donnie Yen/Jet Li - no on else has proven otherwise.
