  1. A quite good quality CAM version of I2 has beem leaked.. spreading like wildfire on Facebook and Torrent sites. Not sure how much impact it has...
  2. I saw it in Singapore, depicting Chinese as small eyed... and fat... and short... gosh
  3. Presales for Incredibles 2 ("I2") in China for next Friday (OD) doesn't look so good. Just like what many critics pointed out I2 lacked the emotional factor. This is an important factor that allowed Coco to do so well in China.. as well as the reason for the surprise multiplier of Wonder and A Dog's purpose in China BO. I am sure I2 will do well in China, but the numbers may not be amazing. Hope i am wrong though.

  5. Just came out of the theater, caught Incredibles 2. Solid WoM is coming... will definitely have incredible legs. Haha
  6. So Donnie Yen has officially taken up the commander role in Mulan. http://deadline.com/2018/04/donnie-yen-mulan-disney-live-action-film-1202362542/ From my understanding, Disney's executives have been very impressed by him in Rogue One, and many of them watched his Ip Man movies before casting him in Rogue One. They created this role specifically for him and it is said they contacted him for this role even earlier than confirming Liu Yifei for mulan. But Donnie was not keen. The producers and director went to China to have a site visit but i heard it was to really speak to Yen and show their sincerity. Guess this time it worked!
  7. It is so common that many audiences automatically inflates a movie score by themselves. Eg if a movie is rated 9.2, some of them mentally think it is a 9.5 cause by default they assumed that there are some attacks.
  8. I called it. Even USD100m in China is a coin toss now. And exchange rate now is so good... it might barely sneak pass usd100m
  9. It had 2 weekends without competition in most parts of Asia despite bad word of mouth from most local sites. So it is more about good release date than anything else. Don't think they should have a sequel.
  10. Who would have expected... Operation Red Sea - High Chance of becoming CNY box office champ. Best military movie from China. Honestly. Who would have though, Chinese New Year is regarded as a time of Joy.. Fun.. and where Comedies or action fantasy with funny elements will triump, due to suitability for all ages. But ORS is showing that quality triumps. Detective Chinatown 2 is solid as well. Unknown IP back in 2015... rode a wave of good WoM for the first film, and the 2nd film is exploding.
  11. I rewatched the first and second while anticipating the third. First Movie was actually not bad - but the CGI was atrocious, but I felt that Donnie Yen’s portrayal of Monkey King and action was really impressive. Storyline of Erlang Diety rebelling was too much of a risk taken by the studio though. Second Movie... was lazy. CGI improved tremendously but there was 0 twist and it had a simple storyline similar to the tv shows/original books. Without any crazy outrage or risk taken, and with improved CGI, 2nd Movie was considered by many as an improvement. 3rd Movie is just Crap. Bad acting, bad pacing and bad plot. CGI at times were worse than the first (which was filmed in 2011).
  12. There is something which I find very intriguing. Hope we can discuss this. This is with regards to Monkey King 3 - do you guys think it was a wise decision to have the mass screening on Valentine’s? It earned big bucks that day but the WoM is atrocious and now it might even lose to Bonnie Bear in total Box Office. if you were the distributor, would you have held it till Chinese New Year then release it? Knowing that the film is a pile of trash in terms of WoM?
  13. So what... Mixed WoM impact is not shown in its first day. and also it was Valentine’s Day, I expected more.. to be honest. Don’t forget this particular MK3 is very focused on Love..and Valentine’s Day was its best chance to do well..
  14. Eh. This is like SW8's domestic box office. People expected Great Wall to earn more in China. Chinese companies fund a lot of movie..even local films.. do all of them make a profit? The total sum may look impressive but rmb that Great Wall made a loss. I love DJ as an actor and hope this does well, but you are playing down potential negative impacts of this script and assuming this will absolutely explode there.
  15. You knew Great Wall is considered a disappointment in China right. And by the way... it is mindset like yours..is why producers keep making such movies and offending many mainland chinese audiences. Lol.
  16. Donnie Yen turned down a role in this. I think it might have been Chin Han's role. But it is not re-written to be character without action scenes as Chin Han is not an action star. Heard from some insiders that the Chinese may not like it, it will be good if DJ works with a Chinese star to save a Chinese building.. This is becoming like Great Wall where a foreigner goes to China and help to save an important infrastructure. Btw.. QingHan is Singaporean, not a China Chinese..no1 in China knows him. He cannot even speak Mandarin well..
  17. Ferdinand’s Maoyan score is a little strange, looks really inflated. Does anyone know whether the distributor is fudging the score?
  18. What? It may not even be in the top 2 spots for Lunar New Year. make a better guess like Monster Hunt 2 or something.
  19. In fact, there are many films that are released in China a year after their original release date. As for more than 2years, that I am not that sure. For Example, Natalie Portman's Jackie just opened today (19th January 2018) in China!
  20. Issue with good films and release date is that.... How good a film is, is something "relative", not "absolute". What I mean is this. Ip Man 3 is considered a very solid, one of the best martial arts film of this decade, but it came out against Zootopia. And despite both having high Maoyan scores, on a relative basis, Zootopia was a better film, hence it went on to break records, while Ip Man 3's box office was slightly disappointing (rampant piracy was also an issue). Same case as Guardians of the Galaxy 2 vs Dangal. Both have high maoyan scores, but Dangal was widely considered the better film. One must understand that many Chinese audiences do not watch many movies, and often have to make a choice to pick a movie to watch each month (just an example). Now if Wonder came out at another release date, it might be considered the Best Film of that period, with a 9.3 Maoyan score and go on to have a leggy run. But releasing along Secret Superstar, many are saying that due to the higher maoyan score, SS is the better film and many will probably watch that film if they can only pick a film this weekend. Therefore release date is important, not just whether there are any holidays, but the the importance of relative competition... how well other films are being received by the audiences.
